Urban growth, physical renewal, and the neglect of social factors have significantly altered historic neighbourhoods, particularly in the Global South, thereby diminishing cultural vibrancy, family interactions, and social belonging. This study, which focuses on a historic neighbourhood in Sanandaj, Iran, bridges the gap between theoretical ideals and practical challenges in fostering cultural sensitivity and inclusive development during the revitalisation of decaying historical settings. In particular, it aims to explore how neighbourhood environments influence residents' sense of identity and how the identity of this historic area shapes place attachment and fosters a sense of belonging throughout the revitalisation process. Upon applying identity process theory and employing an ethnographic method, the semi-structured interviews with 23 residents revealed four key themes: (1) enhanced community belonging, (2) social fragmentation and alienation, (3) behavioural and environmental impacts, and (4) policy and planning challenges. The findings confirmed three research hypotheses, revealing that neighbourhoods offering continuity and distinctiveness strengthen community attachment, while neglect erodes these ties during revitalisation. Furthermore, the unique identity of historic areas fosters place attachment and encourages investments in community well-being, which are requirements for successful revival strategies. Finally, the results demonstrate that a shared sense of identity promotes belonging and enhances social cohesion and resilience for longer community retention. This research advances the theoretical understanding of urban identity and place-making by drawing on identity process theory to propose actionable strategies. By emphasising inclusive, resident-driven approaches, this work offers a pathway towards sustainable urban revitalisation-one that safeguards cultural heritage and strengthens community bonds
