Regional Diversity in Mogollon Red-on-Brown Pottery

Mogollon Red-on-brown ceramic designs are examined through two complementary approaches, symmetry and attribute analyses. Thirty-three whole vessels from seven sites compose the design sample. Sherd frequency data from 41 sites in the Mogollon region, as well as design analyses of the 33 whole vessels, indicate four geographic clusters of this pottery type. These include an eastern center in the Mimbres Valley, the San Francisco River drainage, the Gila River drainage, and the Burro Mountains. It is proposed that these clusters reflect prehistoric social interaction, and the analytic data suggest that there were regional differences among the people producing Mogollon Red-on-brown pottery during the A.D. 700 to 760 period
