This paper examines the development of iron technology and use of iron artefacts in central Darfur. Excavations at three settlements exhibiting early evidence for iron production in the study region are described. The relationship between iron working and the evidence of settlement patterns is discussed. The implications of these data for understanding the social status of smiths is considered, and the various factors leading to the adoption of iron using and iron working within the local communities, and the impact of this technology are examined
