Paleodemographie analyses of the two largest funerary areas of Mehrgarh (Baluchistan, Pakistan) are presented with a view relevant to an archaeological perspective. As a matter of fact, if our methods can produce but a faint picture (not to say questionable) which does not accurately reflect the demographic structure, they nevertheless allow to propose and assess new hypotheses about funerary practices and socio-economic status of populations. Skeletal samples concern the Neolithic cemetery (period IB from Mehrgarh, site MR3, around 6 000 B.C.) and the Chalcolithic one (period IIIB, site MR2, around 4 200 B.C.). This new paleodemographic study mostly takes into account probabilities of death of non-adult individuals (age groups from 0 to 19 completed years); it is based on the whole 95 % confidence interval of age estimates and it implements a recently proposed method : the « principle of minimization of anomalies » according to an archaic mortality pattern. Results are consistent with the already demonstrated evolution towards more standardized and more codified mortuary practices. The Chalcolithic period shows a new isolation practice which excludes newborns and infants off the cemetery : the MR2 sample is biased because of a special « recruiting » as opposed to the Neolithic sample which appears compatible with a natural mortality. Other hypotheses are proposed to explain the more unfavourable demographic condition of the Chalcolithic period
