While Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels forecast the globalization of capitalism in The Communist Manifesto of 1848, it was not until the 1960s that social scientists began to systematically discuss the rise of an international capitalist class as the post‐World War II spread of multinational corporations changed the dynamic of capitalist expansion across the developed into the developing world. Following the lead of Leslie Sklair, many social scientists view the global system as a set of transnational practices. Transnational corporations are the major locus of transnational economic practices; the transnational capitalist class is the major locus of those transnational political practices; and the cultural ideology of consumerism shapes many of the everyday practices individuals follow that support the transnational capitalist system. The research agenda related to transnational capitalism is concerned with how transnational corporations, transnational classes, and the culture‐ideology of consumerism operate to transform the world in terms of the global capitalist project
