For an immigrant, becoming American represents a process of acquiring a new social identity. This article discusses three issues relevant to that process: (1) diverse meanings associated with the American identity; (2) variations in immigrant experience, particularly as they vary by ethnicity; and (3) civic engagement by members of the immigrant community
