Structural remains, burials: and trash pits exposed by land leveling activities in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, were recorded dunng July, 1984. Based on the material remains and corrected radiocarbon assrz:s datingfrom-"A.D. 1206. to 1408, the New Smith site appears affiliated with the Zimms complex, a Plams Village manifestation m western Oklahoma. Structures at the site are thought to represent arbors placed over burial features. Pits associated with these structures contained limited refuse and probably are the by-products of a mortuary ceremony for three deceased individuals found under or adjacent to the arbors. Informatwn from the New Smith site has provided our first insight into socio-religious practices at a Z1mms complex settlement. Bioarchaeological analysis of the human remains indicates relationships to other groups living on the Southern Plains at this time
