Reexamination of the protohistoric Wheeler and Edwards complexes indicates very few differences between them. Indeed, the Little Deer site, the type site for the Wheeler complex, has many similarities to the Duncan site of the Edwards complex. The two complexes should be combined into the Wheeler phase of about AD 1400 or 1450 to 1700. The Wheeler phase people appear to have been indigenous Plains Caddoans derived from local Late Prehistoric groups and probably closely related to Wichita groups historically identified in north-central Oklahoma and central Kansas.Key Words: protohistoric assemblagesSouthern PlainsWheeler phaseWichitaOklahoma
