El presente ensayo sugiere una conexión entre la limitada autonomía concedida a las comunidades indígenas del Nuevo Mundo, gobernadas por un cacique, y aquella concedida previamente a las comunidades mudéjares o musulmanas de la península Ibérica medieval, gobernadas por un qadi. La relación entre ambas estructuras es evidente no solo en términos de la ley y la organización ideal del espacio, sino también en términos del fracaso de dichas estructuras para «contener» a las poblaciones sometidas. Tal como lo demuestran los casos de Lima y Sevilla, miembros de estas comunidades supuestamente segregadas interactuaron cotidianamente con sus colonizadores
