Excavations in the northern annexe of the Roman fort at Camelon near Falkirk, 1961-3
[NS 8680]. Excavations showed that the fort defences extended to form an ?integrally planned annexe defended on the E side by four ditches. Structural and pottery evidence indicate two Antonine phases, with final abandonment by AD 160. The nature of the annexe is unclear (succession of temporary wooden structures). D G

The Implementation of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act on Tyneside
The Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 was a measure of major importance, both as an administrative innovation and because of its social effects. The Ministry of Health archives in the Public Record Office include in the Poor Law Papers a very large and valuable source for the social history of nineteenth century Britain. Much more work on this mass of evidence will be necessary before any very reliable assessment of the effect of the New Poor Law ca…
Some Labour Troubles of the 1790's in North East England
The period of the great French Wars of 1793–1815 saw a crop of strikes and other disturbances in North East England. The end of the wars in 1815 was followed rapidly by the great seamen's strike of 1815, which turned fundamentally on a question of redundancy. The object of this paper is to consider a series of disputes just before the outbreak of war, and during the war's early years, disputes which turned fundamentally on the equally perennial q…
IV. Some Difficulties of Parliamentary Reform
The process of parliamentary reform which laid the foundations for a democratic political structure in this country contained much that was haphazard, and it is the object of this paper to discuss some of these elements, and particularly some of the conceptions and aims on which the legislation was based, and the technical defects of the legislation itself

Industrialisation and Urban Growth in North-East England
The twin processes of industrialisation and urbanisation lie at the heart of the evolution of modern British society, in North-East England as in other areas of large scale industrial development. Despite the cardinal importance of the interaction between these two processes the relationship is only very imperfectly understood; this weakness is in part due to the limited amount of investigation which has taken place, in part to serious deficienci…
The Government of Tyneside, 1800–1850
The infliction of such a parochial topic on this Society may smack of temerity. My apology must be that the emergence of the first modern industrial societies is one of the most important of all historical developments, and that the experience of each of the areas involved is worthy of the historian's meticulous scrutiny
