Organised and personal worldviews revisited. Advancing a concept for religious and worldview education
Beyond fragmentation in subject didactics and curriculum studies
This article deals with the issue whether one can identify characteristic research designs in subject didactics and curriculum studies or not. The answer to this issue is followed through with the help of an empirical study involving 274 participants across various disciplines of subject didactics in German-speaking countries. The participants were asked to evaluate the potential and profile of seven characteristic research fields within subject …
Perceived Discrimination and Religiosity Among Young Refugees in Germany. Insights from a Longitudinal Study
The article explores the relationship between religiosity and perceived discrimination among young refugees in Germany, focusing on a sample primarily composed of Muslim adolescents. Using data from a longitudinal study, the research investigates whether religiosity influences the perception of discrimination and how this relationship evolves over time. The results indicate a slight increase in perceived discrimination within one year, while leve…

Didactical model to promote perspective taking
Many approaches within subject didactics have in common that they highlight the importance of perspective taking, precisely describe the benefits of this skill and develop didactical scenarios in which this skill is crucial. Nevertheless, there is a diagnosed lack of a differentiated didactical model on how to teach perspective taking step by step. This article addresses this desideratum of research in the context of religious education. Therefor…
Religion as a Resource? The Impact of Religiosity on the Sense of Purpose in Life of Young Muslim Refugees in Germany
This study examines the relationship between religiosity and purpose in life among young Muslim refugees (n = 222; Mage = 20.18 years) in Germany, a topic little explored to date. Consistent with previous research, respondents felt a moderate but positive sense of purpose in life, which was fostered by religiosity. Regression analysis demonstrated that even after controlling for physical health and social support, religiosity remained a substanti…
Measuring Muslim Lifestyle Using a Halal Scale
The background and motivation of the research presented in this article is the obligation of Public Theology to do justice to young Muslim refugees as a minority group in German society regarding the role of religiosity in the way they are coping with life. In the research process, the authors became increasingly aware that most instruments to measure religiosity have a Western and/or Protestant bias in that they are more interested in religious …
Religion and Attitude towards Sustainability
Climate change and sustainable lifestyles are discussed intensely in civil society, again. Unlike in the the 1970s and 1980s, however, religious communities seem to play a minor role in this discussion. This raises the question of the importance of religion in regard to an ecological attitude. Based on a sample of N = 4131 (former) church members (age: 14 to 89 years – 47% females – 60% with Bachelor-degree of better), this paper analyzes the eff…
Covid-19, Meaning and Mental Health in Higher Education
The impact of the COVID -19 pandemic is studied among Dutch and German university students and staff, at the inception of the pandemic in April 2020. The effects of conditions of study and work are studied on mental health, while taking into account the adaptive function of meaning and controlling for relevant demographic characteristics. Results indicate that negative experiences of study and work affect various dimensions of mental health and d…
The Coexistence of Faith and Reason
The Post-Secular Society is a project put forward by Habermas as a critique of modern secularism. Habermas envisions this project as a via media—a mediating force between religious fundamentalism and excessive secularism. He argues that religious citizens can translate their religious discourses into a generally-accessible language that would enable them to discuss and communicate with their secular counterparts. This theory provides itself as an…
Research designs in ‘religious didactics’
At present, there are relatively few international studies that reflect research in religious didactics from a metatheoretical perspective. Against this background, the fundamental question of this contribution is whether there are research designs that are typical for research in religious didactics (1.). For this purpose, research was conducted for a later Delphi study; its development (2.), results (3.), and open questions (4.) are presented b…
Between Fight and Theatrical Performance
Whereas previous research has focused on religious education (RE), teachers’ religious attitudes, and personal religiosity, no studies to date have examined their experiences or discussion of positionality in a RE setting. The denominational-cooperative model of RE serves as a specific opportunity for such research since common denominational RE is a setting where denominational positionality seems to be an obvious factor beyond debate. Based on …
Internal Conflict Associated with Disaffiliation from the Roman Catholic Church
In modern Western societies, disaffiliation frequently occurs within the field of religion. To date, many studies have analysed what motivates people to leave religious institutions. However, whether they face internal conflicts during this process has not been intensely studied. Based on Festinger’s concept of cognitive dissonance, this paper re-analyses 27 interviews of persons who left the Catholic Church in the diocese of Essen, North Rhine-W…
Making sense of the crisis
In times of existential crisis, such as the Corona pandemic, people may turn to religious traditions that help them make new sense of the depressing situation. While recent studies have shown that during the Corona pandemic, the frequency of prayer and church attendance increased in several countries, we know little about whether and how religious interpretations of the current crisis occur. Building on Crystal Park's Meaning Making Model, the ar…
Heterogeneity in Religious Commitment and Its Predictors
Nowadays, people show various forms of religious commitment. To better understand this heterogeneity, it is necessary to analyze the factors that predict that commitment. For this purpose, the paper raises the question of whether and how such commitment is predicted by (a) the character of the religious institution to which the individual belongs; (b) individual characteristics, such as intelligence and attitude toward religion; and (c) social en…
Reflecting theology by a generic model of research designs? Impulses from religious didactics
A look at history showed that theology always has to face contemporary demands in terms of its scientific character. At present, processes of pluralisation and secularisation challenge the existence of theology at universities not only against the background of religious studies, which are independent of the churches, but also, for example, in relation to innovative life sciences or cognitive sciences. In this context, an essential point to consi…
Religious and Secular Coping Strategies of Reappraisal
In times of disaster, religion is said to be a powerful resource of meaning-focused coping. If offers motifs, symbols, and stories to reappraise situations and thereby ascribe meaning to them. Aside from religion, in modern times secular resources are feasible for meaning making during disaster as well. Empirical instruments that assess both religious and secular types of meaning-focused coping, however, are not available. Relevant instruments fo…

Differences in children’s concepts of god. A replication study based on creative tasks with different materials
The gendered experiences of boys and girls in their daily lives appear to predict the motifs that children use to express their concepts of God. At the same time, gender-typical behaviour seems to steer the processes by which these concepts are articulated. This paper tests both of these effects of gender on children’s concepts of God by replicating the method of material collage. The sample consists of n = 51 children attending denominational re…
Centrality of Religiosity, Attitude towards Christianity and Post-Critical Belief
The Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS), the Francis Scale of Attitude towards Christianity (FAC) and the Post-Critical Belief Scale (PCB) are three prominent measures of religiosity. Comparing the three measures on theoretical grounds, one may assume that high religiosity (CRS) is linked to both a strong attitude towards Christianity (FAC) and to orthodoxy (PCB), while no religiosity (CRS) may be associated with both a low expressed attitude t…
Dealing with worldviews in religious education
The primary goal of religious education (RE) in Germany is to enable students to develop a personal worldview. According to the literature, this goal can best be achieved when RE a) presents material from various worldviews and b) relates this material to the student’s daily life. Denominational RE, which is the organisational format of this subject in Germany, may fail to meet these requirements because it may tend to focus on the organised worl…

The Impact of Participatory Learning on Attitude
Participatory learning is one way for religious education at school to deal with students’ lack of religious experience. In this paper we analyze the impact of participatory learning on the attitude of students towards church buildings. We engaged 594 third graders (about 8 years old) in German primary schools in an instructional sequence about this building. We assigned students to two groups following different instructional techniques, namely …
What should religious education in Germany be about and how does religiosity fit into this picture? An empirical study of pre-service religious education teachers’ beliefs on the aims of RE
In secularising Germany the aim of religious education (RE) is under discussion. The churches opt for denominational education familiarising the students with their own religious tradition. Humanists claim an ethical education, giving students objective information about different religions. Which perspective do students who will become RE teachers take in this discussion? Does their religiosity affect this perspective? All over Germany 1828 firs…

God in the Mirror of Sex Category and Gender. An Empirical-Theological Approach To Representations of God
Most findings of previous empirical studies on sex-typed or gendered God representations depict the bipolar structure of femaleness versus maleness. This leads one to ask whether these findings reproduce the common sex/gender system. In this article a two-dimensional model of sex category and gender will be developed that is not based on this system. It takes sex category and gender as two modes of perception and representation within the discour…
A typology of religious attitudes among young people in Germany
Issues like faith and Church, religion and religiousness are not valued particularly highly among the young. At the same time a search for the meaning of life and an orientation in one's own behaviour still seem to be significant and transcendent focal points are being sought to deal with these issues. This article questions the value that religion, faith and the Church have for young people on the basis of empirical data. Five types of religious…

Religious Education and Values
This article looks at the kind of religious education that young people want and their value orientations. The data comes from a survey in questionnaire form that was administered to 1925 adolescents (mean age 17.8), of whom 55% were female. As well, 50% of respondents were Roman Catholic, 25% were Lutheran, and 22% reported belonging to no religious community. Essentially the young respondents expressed a wish for religious education that provid…

Does the Body Matter? Effects of Body-Based Learning in Religious Education
Given present-day conditions, pupils today have fewer religious experiences than their classmates of previous generations — and this is a challenge to religious education in public schools. In consequence, many in Germany are opting for a “performative” religious education. The aim of this didactic approach is to offer pupils an encounter with religious practice. It replaces mere knowledge about religion with experience of religion. In this conte…
Holiday Instead of Holy Day? A Qualitative Inquiry on the Spiritual Quality of People’s Activities on Sunday
Daily routine on Sunday is changing. Formerly a day of religious contemplation, Sunday seems to be a day of rest within the family. Does this change in activities done on a typical Sunday imply an end of spiritual quality? To answer this question this paper conceptualizes spirituality as experience of connectedness to some greater reality which is regarded as important and meaningful. Four options are possible concerning this greater reality: a t…
