  • Been there, done that but also not quite

    Open Access•Patricia Tevington, William J Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2023•Referencias: 44

This paper reflects on the possibilities and limits of a team-based, multi-site, evaluative ethnography. In this study, a team of qualitative researchers deployed participant observation methods to assess the level of standardization and local adaptation in the training curriculum for adult leaders in the Boy Scouts of America. While the umbrella organization remained consistent over the course of the 12-months project, researchers completed inte…

  • Longer than I Would've Originally Liked and Originally Thought

    Open Access•Laura Napolitano, Patricia Tevington et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2022•Referencias: 59

While student loans play a large role in the financing of higher education, there has been relatively little qualitative work on how young adults understand their debt burdens and the debt's perceived future impact. We examine this topic utilizing a sample of 105 young people from working-, middle-, and upper middle-class backgrounds who experienced young adulthood during the Great Recession. While most respondents are accepting of debt at the ti…

  • That’s Just a Part of Growing Up”

    Open Access•William J Davis, Milira Cox et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2021•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 7

This instrumental case study explored non-formal educators’ lay theories of adolescence using the case of the Boy Scouts of America’s Scouts BSA program, a co-ed program serving youth between the ages of 11 and 17. We conducted an iterative analysis of 110 structured interviews with Scouts BSA adult volunteer leaders who served as scoutmasters or assistant scoutmasters. Results indicated that participants discussed adolescence in terms of youth c…

  • Emerging Evidence of Positive Youth Constructs and Purpose Development

Open Access•Patricia Tevington, Lisa M Chauveron et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2020•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 6

This study investigates how adolescents begin to demonstrate skills and approaches that help them pursue their aspirations. The qualitative study examined emergent forms of key indicators of adolescent thriving: the 5Cs of positive youth development and sense of purpose. Pre- and post-program interviews with 24 S2 (~seventh grade) Scottish adolescents who participated in a school-based character program explored the presence, absence, and elucida…

  • You’re Throwing Your Life Away”

    Open Access•Patricia Tevington•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2018•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 13

In the midst of a shifting economic and cultural landscape, many young adults spend their twenties focused on individual achievement and self-actualization while delaying entrance into social roles such as marriage. Yet religion, particularly Evangelical Protestantism, places a high value on marriage as the legitimate context for sexuality and childbearing—which encourages earlier unions. This article, based on interviews with 87 dating, engaged,…

  • Religious Inequality in America

    Open Access•Melissa J Wilde, Patricia Tevington et al.•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2018•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 20

Sociology has largely ignored class differences between American religious groups under the assumption that those differences “are smaller than they used to be and are getting smaller all of the time” (Pyle & Davidson, 2014, p. 195). This article demonstrates that profound class differences remain amongst American religious groups. These differences are as large as—or larger than—commonly examined forms of inequality such as the gender pay gap an…

  • Privileged to Worry

    Patricia Tevington•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2018•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 56

How do differences in cultural capital operate in conditions of uncertainty? Interviews with 106 young adults of different social class backgrounds demonstrate significantly different knowledge of and attitudes about the Great Recession. Upper middle class youth are the most concerned about their long-term futures in light of the economic downturn and use distinctive strategies to combat these anticipated negative consequences. In contrast, worki…

  • Complex Religion

Open Access•Melissa J Wilde, Patricia Tevington•OTHER•Emerging Trends in the Social and…•2017

Sociologists have long known that religion is deeply interconnected with race, class, and ethnicity in the United States. However, modern sociologists typically study religion as if it is independent from other social structures. Profound class differences remain between American religious groups. Jews, Mainline Protestants and new immigrant groups such as Hindus are at the top of the socioeconomic ladder. Conservative Protestants, both Black and…

  • Financing Children's Futures

    Open Access•Patricia Tevington, Laura Napolitano et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2017•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 8

This paper, based on three waves of qualitative data with middle‐income families outside of Philadelphia, explores how families deal with the challenge of financing postsecondary education over time. Because of economic setbacks, these families adopt a variety of financial maneuvers to support their young adult children's postsecondary educational plans. In particular, families are driven to sacrifice familial savings accounts and retirement fund…
