    Napoleon A Chagnon•BOOK•Noble savages•2013

I had traveled in a small aluminum rowboat propelled by a large outboard motor for two and a half days, cramped in with several extra fifty-five-gallon gasoline barrels and two Venezuelan functionaries who worked for the Malarialogia, the Venezuelan malaria control service. They were headed to their tiny outpost in Yanomamo territory—two or three thatched huts. This boat trip took me from the territorial capital, Puerto Ayacucho, a small town on …

  • Growth rates and life histories in twenty‐two small‐scale societies

Open Access•Robert S Walker, Robert Walker et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2006

This study investigates variation in body growth (cross‐sectional height and weight velocity) among a sample of 22 small‐scale societies. Considerable variation in growth exists among hunter‐gatherers that overlaps heavily with growth trajectories present in groups focusing more on horticulture. Intergroup variation tends to track environmental conditions, with societies under more favorable conditions displaying faster growth and earlier puberty…

  • Nuclear and mitochondrial genetic variation in the Yanomamö

Sloan R Williams, Napoleon A Chagnon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2002

Ancient DNA provides a potentially revolutionary way to study biological relationships in prehistoric populations, but genetic patterns are complex and require careful interpretation based on robust, well-tested models. In this study, nuclear and mitochondrial markers were compared in the Yanomamö, to assess how well each data set could differentiate among closely related groups. The villages selected for the study share a recent fission history …

  • Life Histories, Blood Revenge, and Warfare in a Tribal Population

    Open Access•Napoleon A Chagnon•ARTICLE•Science•1988

Blood revenge is one of the most commonly cited causes of violence and warfare in tribal societies, yet it is largely ignored in recent anthropological theories of primitive warfare. A theory of tribal violence is presented showing how homicide, revenge, kinship obligations, and warfare are linked and why reproductive variables must be included in explanations of tribal violence and warfare. Studies of the Yanomamö Indians of Amazonas during the …

  • Protein Deficiency and Tribal Warfare in Amazonia

    Open Access•Napoleon A Chagnon, R Hames et al.•ARTICLE•Science•1979

Increasing numbers of anthropological studies about native Amazonian warfare and demographic practices attempt to explain these phenomena as competition over or a response to scarce game animals and other sources of high-quality protein. Recently completed field research among the Yanomamö Indians living at the Venezuela-Brazil border indicates that their protein intake is comparable to that found in highly developed industrialized nations and as…

    Open Access•Richard S Spielman, F J Da Rocha et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1972•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 17

Anthropometric data on 12 variables in 19 villages of the Yanomama Indians demonstrate significant heterogeneity in physique among villages of this tribe. Mahalanobis' distances (D 2 ) calculated from the data lead to the tentative conclusion of a general correspondence between anthropometric and geographic distances separating villages. The mean stature of the Yanomama is smaller than that of most other South American tribes which have been meas…

  • Demographic structure of a primitive population

    Open Access•Jean W Maccluer, James V Neel et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1971•Citada por: 19•Referencias: 5

A stochastic computer simulation model has been used to study the demography of the Ya̧nomamö Indians of Venezuela and Brazil, whose social organization is typical of many primitive societies. It has been found by simulation that perhaps one third of all Ya̧nomamö marriages involve individuals related as first or second cousins, and that more than 16% of all males must leave their villages to find wives, in spite of a strong preference for villag…

    Open Access•Napoleon A Chagnon, James V Neel et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1970•Citada por: 22•Referencias: 1

A single village of Yanomama Indians was found to have frequencies of Di a of 0.06 and of Ap a of 0.08, in contrast to 40 other villages where Di a was absent and Ap a quite rare. The source of these genes was identified as a village of Makiritare Indians, but the two allele frequencies were approximately the same or even higher in the Yanomama than in the Makiritare village. Demographic, social and cultural parameters affecting marriage and repr…
