Does belief have a history
This article examines the claim, which several important scholars have seemed to endorse, that belief is a historically and culturally contingent mental state. This claim has radical implications, and I try to reconstruct the assumptions about belief that could motivate it and consider whether these assumptions are well founded. I focus particularly on Malcolm Ruel's essay "Christians as believers" but also discuss the work of Rodney Needham, Jea…
Belief’ and Anthropology, in Use and in Theory
This essay examines the standing of three important and widely accepted criticisms of the use of the concept of belief within the anthropology of religion. It does so by examining whether these criticisms track the historical use of the concept within the discipline, that is, whether the problematic implications that they associate with the concept can reasonably be inferred from the historical use of the words ‘believe’ and ‘belief’ by anthropol…
Conceptions of Tolerance in Antiquity and Late Antiquity

The author concludes by contrasting the late antique conceptions of tolerance with contemporary conceptions, and suggest…

But is this assumption warranted? This paper addresse…
