Worlds of Byzantium
Worlds of Byzantium offers a new understanding of what it means to study the history and visual culture of the Byzantine empire during late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Arguing that linguistic and cultural frontiers do not always coincide with political ones, it suggests that Byzantine studies should look not only within but also beyond the borders of the Byzantine empire and include the history of Christian populations in the Muslim-ruled Midd…
First data on animal exploitation in Funj Sultanate, Kingdom of Dongola, Sudan (16th–17th centuries)
The scientific importance of the archaeozoological study of 16th‐ to 17th‐century faunal materials from Old Dongola in Sudan cannot be overstated in view of it being the only regular project of its kind on postmedieval material from Sudan to date. The results highlight the dynamics of the sociopolitical transformation taking place at this time. From the point of view of the economy, domestic cattle were the most important species, and there are c…

The 'last' king of Makuria (Dotawo)
Representations of Makurian Kings and Queens (Mothers of the King), dated from the end of the 8th through the 13th centuries, have been preserved inside several churches of Makuria, but mostly inside the cathedrals of Pachoras. The representation of the king inside the monastery church NB.2.2 in Dongola is the latest one and the most fully preserved with the regalia and late dress
Makuria in the middle of the 12th century
In the middle of the 12th century, the King of Dotawo (Makuria) and Arwa, referred to as Mouse Georgios in many Old Nubian documents and in studies on the subject, was the eparch of Palaga, a province of the Kingdom of Arwa, and in all likelihood the official heir of King Paulos of Arwa. He was crowned King of Makuria (Dotawo) in 1155, following mediation by the Fatimid caliph between the two kings, Georgios V of Makuria and Paulos of Arwa. The c…
Archaeological and architectural evidence of social change in 13th–17th century Dongola
The article reviews the body of archaeological and architectural evidence for social transformation taking place in Dongola during the period from the end of the 13th through the end of the 17th century, the uppermost stratum uncovered by Polish archaeologists excavating the ruins of the medieval seat of Makurian kings. Domestic architecture from the late 14th through 17th centuries and the artifactual finds from these dwellings, which were built…
Naqlun 2016
During the 2016 season in Naqlun, dedicated to an array of specialist studies of material in the storeroom, the team documented one of the hermitages located in the hills west of the monastic compound. The work was necessitated by evident illicit digging which had partly destroyed the compound. The hermitage, which occupied a small valley, appears to have comprised at least three living units, furnished with rock-cut storage pits in the floor and…
Short history of the Church of Makuria (mid-6th–early 12th century)
The article outlines the history of the Makurian church from the conversion of the kingdom to Christianity until the death of the archbishop Georgios in AD 1113, focusing particularly on the relations of the Makurian Church with the Church of Alexandria, and emphasizing its independence from Byzantine and Coptic influence from the second half of the 8th century until the time of Georgios
