  • Refugees across the generations. Generational relations between the 'GDR children of Namibia' and their children

    C Schmitt, Matthias D Witte•ARTICLE•New Community•2021•Referencias: 6

This article represents the first ever analysis of the generational relations of an otherwise largely neglected group – the ‘GDR children of Namibia’ and their children. The ‘GDR children of Namibia’ are a group of 430 people who were removed from Namibian refugee camps between 1979 and 1989 and taken to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) as part of a solidarity pact between the South-West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) and the Socialist …

  • An analysis of metaphors in the biographies of the 'GDR children of Namibia

Karin Müller, Yvonne Niekrenz et al.•ARTICLE•African Studies•2020•Referencias: 20

Metaphors are linguistically dense images that transfer terms from their original usage to a different context and describe actions and objects beyond their literal meaning. This article uses Rudolf Schmitt's metaphor analysis (2017) to gain insight into the experiences of the so-called GDR children of Namibia. This term refers to a group of approximately 430 people who, as part of a solidarity project between the South West Africa People's Organ…

They came from Namibian refugee camps and were part of a solidarity project between South West African People's Organization (SWAPO) and the GDR. They were educated to become the Namibian elite once the country had been liberated. Their stay was to…
