It's Not You, It's Me—Women's Denial of Gendered Inequalities in the Event Industry
Gender inequalities are a persistent barrier to career progression, including in industries predominantly occupied by women. This study used a Delphi study in the United Kingdom and Australia to analyze women's experiences of careers in the event industry—an inherently gendered context. We show that societal and business factors combine to create gendered inequality regimes, and this creates a wicked problem—women make up most of the workforce, b…
Hong Kong as a Global Business and Financial Hub
Nurturing mutual gains in the public sector
The aim of our inquiry is to investigate how and when socially responsible human resource practices (SRHR practices) foster service performance and psychological health among public sector employees. The participants for this research were recruited from wards (local level governments) in Vietnam. The data from the participants were analysed through multilevel structural equation modelling. The results lent credence to the positive relationships …
Social Capital in the Asia Pacific
Competitive advantage and the transformation of value chains over time
We examine the historical evolution of different elements in value chains that create value-added and competitive advantage. This is achieved by using the conceptual model of the ‘smile curve’ with a longitudinal case study of a diversified business group, CJ Group, a former affiliated firm of Samsung Group. We found that the value-added structure graph in the industrialisation period displayed an ‘upside-down U shape’, indicating that production…

The Changing Face of Korean Management
Part of the successful Routledge ‘Working in Asia’ series, The Changing Face of Korean Management focuses on a country that is predicted by some experts to become the world’s third richest by 2025. South Korea, with its thriving telecommunications and automotive industries, and increasing trade links with China, survived the 1997 Asian Economic Crisis better than most. This important textbook explores the key areas of management in this pivotal c…

Factors in team effectiveness
The benefits of teams and teamwork are popular and propounded in management discourse. The use of this lexicon is based on beliefs in the resultant mutual gains for both organizations and individuals. Yet, are all teams, irrespective of the characteristics of membership composition, the same in terms of such beneficial outcomes? This study investigates the importance of team member characteristics, particularly cognitive and demographic, on team …
The ethnic factor in state-labour relations
Given the ethnic dimension of much conflict, it is time to acknowledge the ethnic factor in the field of employment, and the manner in which material conflicts can be articulated in identity terms. Identifications that transcend class, for example, in emphasising the commonality of ethnic identity, can serve not only to obscure intra-group class divisions under the veil of cultural closure, but also to foreclose the potential for inter-group clas…
Context, Developments and Interactions in the HRM System in South Korea
The term “Asian” is often applied generically in terms of human resource management (HRM) across a geographically (and to some extent seemingly culturally) close region. However, country-specific aspects of HRM remain even within such regions. HRM in South Korea is illustrative of this and can be conceptualized as embedded within resourcing and rewards practices and their internal dichotomies in two dimensions: seniority and regulation versus per…

Flexible specialisation
Research that questions the general validity of flexible specialisation can be supplemented by an example that is, paradoxically, frequently used as a supporting example: ceramic tile production. This article examines some comparative evidence and concludes that support is illusory and all too often based on the same weak original data, while there are actually more robust indications of moves towards classical mass production
The illusion of flexible specialization
Here the author evaluates the transformational potential of flexible specialization. He uses evidence from a long established area of manufacturing, the domesticware sector of the British ceramics industry. This work highlights the limitations to flexible specialization as a general thesis and pertinent variables in analyzing sectoral shifts
The British Pottery Industry
In a paper in an earlier volume of Environment and Planning A Imrie argues that in the 1980s the British pottery industry was restructuring in various ways, not least towards some form of Fordism, post-Fordism, Japanese-style production, and internationalisation. In this paper it is argued that, first, developments are not new to the industry; second, the empirical basis of Imrie's argument is limited; third, some trends have actually been in con…
