  • Integrating local and regional environmental influences in the Velyka Andrusivka loess–palaeosol sequence, Middle Dnieper (Ukraine)

Open Access•Przemysław Mroczek, Maria Łanczont et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

The Middle Dnieper region, situated within a transitional glacial–periglacial zone, preserves complex loess–palaeosol archives. This study reconstructs the environmental evolution of the Velyka Andrusivka sequence using a multiproxy approach integrating sedimentological, geochemical, mineralogical, magnetic, and palynological data supported by luminescence dating. The succession rests on Dnieper glacial till and comprises loess units from the las…

  • High-resolution radiocarbon and OSL cross-dating of Late Pleniglacial to Early Holocene aeolian succession and wildfire dynamics at the Łaskarzew site, eastern Poland

Open Access•Piotr Moska, Natalia Piotrowska et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

The chronology of Late Glacial and Early Holocene dune formation and wildfire activity at the Łaskarzew site, eastern Poland, was reconstructed using a combination of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating ( 14 C) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. The stratigraphic profile records 13 aeolian-soil cycles, characterized by alternating phases of aeolian deposition, soil formation, and wildfire episodes, reflecting t…

  • Upper Palaeolithic Occupations in The Middle Dnister Valley

    Open Access•Muséum national d’histoire naturelle, L Demay et al.•ARTICLE•Arheologia•2024

In 2019, new excavations were carried out at Doroshivtsi III site, dated to the Last Glacial Maximum. Ten identifiable archaeological levels belong to the Gravettian technocomplex. In the article, detailed data about the faunal remains is presented. The remains of reindeer, horses, mammoths, a wolf, a vulpine, and also a crow have been identified. According to the data, the main species for hunting were reindeer, then horses. In comparison with t…

  • A closer look at clasts and groundmass

  • Early farming settlement of the marginal zone of loess uplands and its palaeoenvironmental context – a case study of the Iłża Piedmont (S Poland)

Marcin Szeliga, Przemysław Mroczek et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2023•Citada por: 2

The results of previous researches conducted across the upland territories of Central Europe reflect a considerably close correlation between the settlement by prehistoric agricultural societies and the ranges of the local loess covers. This correspondence – caused mainly by the high utility value of the territories in question, especially the presence of fertile soils and convenient geomorphological and hydrological conditions – is apparent even…

  • An Impact of Short-Term Climate Oscillations in the Late Pleniglacial and Lateglacial Interstadial on Sedimentary Processes and the Pedogenic Record in Central Poland

Piotr Moska, Robert J Sokołowski et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2023•Referencias: 63

Environmental studies based on analyses of fluvio-aeolian successions with paleosols in central Poland, forming the central part of the European Sand Belt, are presented. Paleogeographic reconstruction was based on high-resolution analyses of four sites using sedimentological and paleopedological methods as well as forty-four optically stimulated luminescence and fourteen radiocarbon dating measurements. Age-identified individual lithological and…

  • Eastern periphery of the Magdalenian world. Wierzawice 31 hunting campsite (SE Poland)

Open Access•Dariusz Bobak, Maria Łanczont et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2022

Wierzawice 31 site is one of the easternmost Magdalenian sites, situated in the south-eastern corner of the Kolbuszowa Plateau surrounded, to the east, by the broad San River valley and, on the south, by the sub-Carpathian ice-marginal valley. This archaeological site lies in an area with surface deposits developed as periglacial stratified silty-sandy sediments about 10 m thick, adjoined in the NW by an isolated patch of loess of the island type…

Open Access•Damian Moskalewicz, Witold Szczuciński et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2022

  • Reinterpretation of Fluvial-Aeolian Sediments From Last Glacial Termination Classic Type Localities Using High-Resolution Radiocarbon Data From the Polish Part of the European Sand Belt

    Open Access•Robert J Sokołowski, Piotr Moska et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 63

This paper presents 66 radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates obtained at 33 key sites from the Polish part of the European Sand Belt. These calibrated dating results were compared to 34 high-resolution 14 C dates obtained from a fluvial-aeolian sediments to identify pedogenic phases from the late Pleniglacial interval to the early Holocene. These identified pedogenic phases were correlated with Greenland ice-core records, revealing high sensitivity of the fl…

  • The Upper Palaeolithic at Trenčianske Bohuslavice, Western Carpathians, Slovakia

    J Wilczyński, Ondrej Žaár et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2020•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 22

Trenčianske Bohuslavice Gravettian site has been known since the early 1980s, with possibly the longest sequence of Upper Palaeolithic human occupation in the region, including a peculiar assemblage of lithic tools composed of bifacial leaf points. This paper presents the results of the 2017 excavation season that produced new data on the absolute chronology, stratigraphy, paleobotany, archaeology, and archaeozoology of the site. We found that th…

  • Early agricultural colonisation of peripheral areas of loess uplands

Open Access•Marcin Szeliga, Radosław Dobrowolski et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2020•Citada por: 1

Excavations in marginal areas of the loess uplands in southern Poland have revealed that the northern periphery of the Sandomierz Upland was intensely colonised in the sixth and fifth millennia BC by Linearbandkeramik and Malice Culture Danubian communities. This research suggests that analogous settlement clusters may exist in other marginal regions of the Central European loess belt, previously thought to be uninhabited

  • Environmental Conditions of Settlement of the Danubian Communities in the Northern Foreland of the Sandomierz Upland

Open Access•Marcin Szeliga, Radosław Dobrowolski et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Polona•2019

The article raises the issue of the nature, intensity and environmental conditions of the settlement processes occurring on the borderline of the loessic Sandomierz Upland and the sandyclay areas of the Iłża Foothills, between the end of the 6th and the beginning of the 4th millennia BC. The results of previously conducted research confirm the high settlement activity in these areas, throughout the period of development of the Danubian cultural g…
