  • Times of changes, the latest Pleistocene micromammal association of the Salto de Piedra site (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina)

    Open Access•Gustavo N Gómez, Fernando J Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

The results of the taxonomic, taphonomic, and paleoecological analyses of Late Pleistocene micromammals from the Salto de Piedra paleontological locality are presented in this paper. Our results support the conclusion that the microfaunal remains were mainly accumulated by diurnal raptors in areas close to where the remains were deposited, as there is no evidence of transport. Taxonomically, the recovered micromammals include rodents currently in…

The results allow us to place B. v. magellanicus in the category of intermediate modification (Category 2). This sample has also been compared with results from other members of this genus, in order to classify B. v. magellanicus as a taphonomic agent. The part…

We present the results of the taphonomic analysis of bone and tooth remains of Conepatus chinga (Molina’s hog-nosed skunk) from seven late Holocene archaeological sites located in the upper and middle basin of the Limay River (northwestern Patagonia). The low incidence of posdepositational natural agents indicated good conservation and rapid burial of the assemblages. Taphonomic evidence suggests that C. chinga was mainly used for consuming its m…

How prehispanic foragers adjusted their foraging activities to plant cultivation is a question that drives much of the modern archaeological research. As a result, the spread of food-producing economies during the Late Prehispanic Period (c. 1500-360 BP) from Sierras of Crdoba, Argentina, has been recently defined as a dynamic sociocultural process, where a mixed foraging and cultivation economy was accompanied by a flexible land-use strategy. Ho…

In this paper we evaluate the role of human strategies in the Andean Piedmont from northern Patagonia across the Holocene. Specifically, we present the analysis of the Early Holocene-Late Holocene archaeological record of Salamanca cave (Mendoza-Argentina). We identified technological changes that occurred during the Late Holocene and the implications of a human occupation hiatus in the Middle Holocene. We follow a multiproxy approach by the anal…
