  • A Systems Thinking Approach to Understand the Impacts of Pesticides on the Great Barrier Reef Ecosystems

Open Access•Thuc D Phan, Edoardo Bertone et al.•ARTICLE•Systems Research and Behavioral…•2026

The health and resilience of the Great Barrier Reef ecosystems are affected by complex dynamics and interconnected processes. A systems thinking approach can aid to comprehensively understand the past, current and future system behaviour, thereby informing effective decision‐making. A qualitative conceptual model was developed based on the theory of systems thinking approach and critical literature reviews, giving consideration to the complex non…

  • Recognising and Realising the Field of Systems Research in Itself and for Itself

Open Access•Louis Klein, Pamela Buckle et al.•ARTICLE•Systems Research and Behavioral…•2025

Systems thinking emerged as a transdisciplinary movement that sought to bridge the sciences, humanities and practices of change. Today, it spans many fields but risks losing coherence as its core ideas are repeatedly rediscovered and reapplied without deepening their theoretical roots. This paper draws on the experiences of the cybersystemic community under the roof of the International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR) and a scoping review …

  • Reimagining Systems Thinking as Cybersystemic Researching

Open Access•Ray Ison, Pamela Buckle et al.•ARTICLE•Systems Research and Behavioral…•2025•Referencias: 45

This paper reimagines the future of systems research as an enacted cybersystemic praxis that moves beyond traditional notions of systems thinking. We argue that systems research is best understood as a reflexive, embodied and situated practice that integrates systemic sensibilities, systems literacy and capabilities in (cyber)systemic co‐inquiry. Drawing on insights from systems theory, cybernetics, complexity science and process philosophy, we c…

  • Evolving Risk Management Frameworks for Complex Systems—An Empirically Grounded Systems Thinking Approach

Open Access•Benjamin Luther, Indra Gunawan et al.•ARTICLE•Systems Research and Behavioral…•2025•Referencias: 39

The increasing complexity of systems is demanding a paradigm shift in risk management frameworks (RMFs). This study adopts a systems thinking approach to conduct an empirically grounded analysis (EGA) of the risk management practices of Flight Test crews operating in a dynamic environment with catastrophic consequences. Extending upon qualitative research that elicited the unique RMF of Flight Test crews, the EGA examines the academic theory unde…

  • Valuing who we are in relation to others

Open Access•Louis Klein, Pamela Buckle et al.•ARTICLE•Systems Research and Behavioral…•2024

In our Agenda Essays to date, we have argued the need to frame contemporary circumstances in terms of the Anthropocene‐world we humans have created. We also prioritise the five‐decade‐old, prescient analysis of humanity's predicament as the ‘global problématique.’ Earlier, we advocated for identifying comprehensive modes of ‘collaborative agency’ to better unleash the transformative potential inherent in cybersystems thought and action. In the pr…

  • Navigating the polycrisis—governing for transformation

Open Access•Louis Klein, Pamela Buckle et al.•ARTICLE•Systems Research and Behavioral…•2023

The challenges of the Anthropocene were pre‐empted by systems scholars in the exposition of the ‘global problematique’ and are now made manifest in what systems scholars called the polycrisis. These framings alert us to our human circumstances but to date, have done little to transform our manners of being and doing, as the polycrisis is an outcome of a profound governance crisis. Ongoing reflections, building on the framing offered by the global…

  • Factors impacting HIV testing among young sexually active women migrant workers in Vietnamese industrial zones

Open Access•Toan Ha, Hui Shi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Overall, a low level of HIV testing, high rates of unprotected sex, and low perceived risks regarding HIV among the study participants point to a need to implement targeted HIV interventions that can improve both safe sex practices and perceptions of and knowledge about risky sexual behaviors. Such interventions should use insights from this study to address factors facilitating HIV testing among industrial zones' women migrant workers

  • Growing a community of conversation and understanding

Open Access•Louis Klein, Pamela Buckle et al.•ARTICLE•Systems Research and Behavioral…•2022

In his 1970 report to the Club of Rome, Hasan Özbekhan compiled an extensive collection of intersecting issues confronting humanity—the Global Problématique. Alas, half a century later, we find ourselves even further entrenched in this network of complex, systemic issues that some have framed the Anthropocene, a period new to human history. Collectively, we must take seriously the question: what purposeful action will aid human flourishing, creat…

  • The hidden reasons of the Vietnamese parents for paying private tuition fees for public school teachers

    Open Access•The Cuong Nguyen, Abdul Hafeez-Baig et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences & Humanities Open•2021

This article investigates the Vietnamese parents’ hidden reasons for paying private tutoring fees for public school teachers. The authors conducted qualitative research on seventy-two parents of grade 1 to 12 tutees in three urban and three rural areas in Vietnam. The findings show that: First, the participants are willing to pay private tuition fees for public school teachers because they strongly trust in public school teaching quality, teacher…

  • Rethinking agency—The 2022 agenda for the systems community

Open Access•Louis Klein, Pamela Buckle et al.•ARTICLE•Systems Research and Behavioral…•2021

Five clusters of concern arising from IFSR‐facilitated conversations with its organisational members are used to invite the broader systems community to rethink agency. It is argued that by addressing the cluster elements, potential will be co‐created for the systems community as a whole to help citizens venture beyond failing responses to the global problematique and the Anthropocene‐creating thinking in which we humans are trapped. The five clu…

  • Factors influencing tobacco use treatment patterns among Vietnamese health care providers working in community health centers

    Open Access•Donna Shelley, Tuo‐Yen Tseng et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Despite ratifying the FCTC, Viet Nam has not made progress in implementing policies and systems to ensure that smokers are receiving evidence-based treatment. This study suggests a need to change organizational norms through changes in national policies, training and local system-level changes that facilitate treatment
