What was Murrhine
In 1855 C. Müller published the first volume of hisGeographi Graeci Minores: in the introduction to the 'Periplus of the Erythraean Sea' he states that he has studied six hundred writers on the question' what was murrhine, but that it may be now regarded as certain that murrhine vases were made of fluorspar'. Aetites or the Eagle-stone
An Aetites may be defined as any hollow stone containing loose matter, a smaller stone or sand, which rattles when shaken. Such objects are of little interest to the modern geologist, who usually breaks them open in order to examine the interior for crystals or impressions of fossils. Their importance to the archaeologist and student of folk-lore may be gauged by the fact that they are mentioned by Dioscorides about A.D. 69 and in the fourteenth …
Ancient Mining Processes as illustrated by a Japanese Scroll
In the Geographical journal for August 1940 I published a brief summary of the 'Evidence for Ancient Mining', one illustration for which was taken from a Japanese colour-print by Hiroshigi of the interior of a gold mine. As a result of reading this article, Dr H. J. Osborne White, a well-known geologist, sent me the scroll which forms the subject of the present paper.
