This special issue contributes to the emerging research field of religion and populism in contemporary media contexts. With a shared focus on how Protestant Nordic contexts align with populist practices in specific ways, the articles provide illustrative examples of how the entanglement between religion, populism and media needs to be taken into account when dealing with contemporary public and political debates in the Nordics. We show, for the first time, the relative strength of Danish identification with Christian culture and Old Norse culture. The study uses two measures: 1) the Identity Fusion (IF) scale to measure personal identification with a given culture, and 2) a task that measures the extent to which participants attribute central Danish values to a Christian or an Old Norse cultural heritage. The role of flowers in the personalization of Christian funerals in Denmark
Flowers are a common element in Danish funerals. Drawing on fieldnotes, interviews and survey data on funeral practices in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark as well as theories of ritualization, meaning-making and practices, this article shows that flowers are not only a sine qua non in the funerals but are also used to make them more personal and to produce and reproduce social relations. This article analyzes two Danish news stories in order to discuss the reasons that spirituality seems to be less newsworthy than religion. Drawing on Anderson’s concept of imagined communities, and Luhmann’s account of the mass media in a modern functionally differentiated society, I argue that spirituality seldom registers as controversial in the news stories. The number of Lutheran chaplains in Danish public institutions (hospitals, prisons, the military) has grown substantially in the last few decades. This article presents the results of a recent study of Lutheran (Church of Denmark) chaplains. The material studied is a collection of legal documents and media, a population survey of 300 chaplains, and 34 qualitative interviews. Religion in Newspapers in The Nordic Countries in 1988–2008
This article examines the coverage of religion in Nordic newspapers during 1988, 1998 and 2008. Through quantitative analyses of 5,000 articles in 14 newspapers, we examine the differences between the five Nordic countries and changes from 1988 to 2008. The results show that the coverage of the Lutheran majority churches in newspapers is generally declining, especially in Sweden. This is the case also during major Christian holidays. Newspapers p…

This article examines the coverage of religion in Nordic newspapers during 1988, 1998 and 2008.
