High-density lipoprotein is inversely associated with psychiatric symptoms across diagnoses in patients with general psychiatric disorders
HDL was significant inversely associated with several general psychiatric symptoms. This result indicates a role for lipids in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders and suggests a mechanism for the increased cardiovascular risk across psychiatric diagnoses
Effectiveness of Atman psychological intervention in reducing self-harm in young people in India
There is a scarcity of psychological interventions for self-harm in young people, either developed or adapted for use in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). ATMAN i s a psychological intervention developed in India for youth with three key modules: problem-solving, emotion regulation and social network strengthening skills in addition to crisis management. ATMAN was delivered in 27 youth with a history of self-harm (14–24 years old) sequenti…
Are recessions bad for loneliness
Loneliness is a pressing public health concern with significant economic, health and social consequences. This paper examines the impact of economic downturns, particularly unemployment and job loss perception, on loneliness in Australia. Using a fixed-effects panel regression applied to 19 waves of data, we find that unemployment is significantly linked to an increased likelihood of experiencing loneliness and other dimensions of social health, …
Aerobic capacity and mitochondrial function in bipolar disorder
Our preliminary data showed that lower basal oxygen consumption may be linked to greater mitochondrial respiratory capacity, and maximum oxygen uptake during the exercise task was associated with lower basal mitochondrial respiration, suggesting that lower oxygen requirements could be associated with greater mitochondrial capacity. These findings should be replicated in larger samples stratified for manic and depressive states
Symptoms of depression and risk of emergency department visits among people aged 70 years and over
This study is unique in demonstrating how depressive symptoms among healthy older persons are associated with subsequent increased use of emergency healthcare. Improved understanding and monitoring of mental health in primary care is essential to undertake effective healthcare planning including prevention of needing emergency care
Gender-specific aspects of socialisation and risk of cardiovascular disease among community-dwelling older adults
BACKGROUND: Gender influences cardiovascular disease (CVD) through norms, social relations, roles and behaviours. This study identified gender-specific aspects of socialisation associated with CVD. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted, involving 9936 (5,231 women and 4705 men) initially healthy, community-dwelling Australians aged 70 years or more from the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) study and ASPREE Longitudinal Stu…
Comparing 12-Month Outcomes for Group CBT Versus Group CBT Plus Yoga for Depression and Anxiety
Emerging research shows yoga, a body-based mindfulness practice, appears to augment the benefits of transdiagnostic group CBT up to 3-month post-treatment, but less is known about longer-term outcomes. This mixed-methods study reports on 12-month findings of a pragmatic preference trial with adults ( N = 59) diagnosed with depression or anxiety. It compares longer-term outcomes between adults who completed either a group CBT program or group CBT …

Participatory Propaganda
Rapidly evolving information communications technologies (ICTs) and increased connectivity to online sources have drastically altered the ways individuals engage in the public information domain and, in turn, become influenced by it. As citizens become increasingly plugged-in, a savvy propagandist can acquire enhanced means of swaying opinions around the world by combining tech-enabled formats of persuasive content, automated dissemination and au…
Coping with Covid-19
There are important differences in the way people with and without a history of a mental health diagnosis cope with the COVID-19 pandemic
Child and Parent Physical Activity, Sleep, and Screen Time During Covid-19 and Associations With Mental Health
The COVID-19 pandemic has afforded the opportunity for some to improve lifestyle behaviours, while for others it has presented key challenges. Adverse changes in global lifestyle behaviours, including physical activity, sleep, and screen time can affect proximal mental health and in turn distal cardiovascular outcomes. We investigated differences in physical activity, sleep, and screen time in parents and children during early stages of the COVID…
Assessing Suicidal Ideation in Young People With Depression
Evaluating suicidal ideation in young people seeking mental health treatment is an important component of clinical assessment and treatment planning. To reduce the burden of youth suicide, we need to improve our understanding of suicidal ideation, its underlying constructs, and how ideation translates into suicidal behaviour. Using exploratory factor analysis, we investigated the dimensionality of the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) among 2…

Preventive psychiatry
Preventive approaches have latterly gained traction for improving mental health in young people. In this paper, we first appraise the conceptual foundations of preventive psychiatry, encompassing the public health, Gordon's, US Institute of Medicine, World Health Organization, and good mental health frameworks, and neurodevelopmentally‐sensitive clinical staging models. We then review the evidence supporting primary prevention of psychotic, bipol…

The Effect of Adjunctive Mangosteen Pericarp on Cognition in People With Schizophrenia
Background: Cognitive impairment is prevalent and often highly burdensome in people with schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to investigate if mangosteen ( Garcinia mangostana Linn.) pericarp extract may be an effective intervention to improve cognitive performance in this population. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a larger randomized placebo-controlled trial that investigated a 24-weeks intervention of mangosteen pericarp extract…
The Audience is the Amplifier
Propaganda is changing in a Digital Age. What once was a top-down effort to the masses has through the internet become a participatory affair. As people increasingly “plug-in” to online services, a wealth of personal data aggregated by internet giants facilitates the creation and distribution of tailored provocative messaging, which savvy propagandists then push through online communities to unsuspecting target audiences who help spread persuasiv…
Studies on Haloperidol and Adjunctive α-Mangostin or Raw Garcinia mangostana Linn Pericarp on Bio-Behavioral Markers in an Immune-Inflammatory Model of Schizophrenia in Male Rats
Schizophrenia is a severe brain disorder that is associated with neurodevelopmental insults, such as prenatal inflammation, that introduce redox-immune-inflammatory alterations and risk for psychotic symptoms later in life. Nutraceuticals may offer useful adjunctive benefits. The aim of this study was to examine the therapeutic effects of Garcinia mangostana Linn (GML) and one of its active constituents, α-mangostin (AM), alone and as adjunctive …
Personality Disorder and Physical Health Comorbidities
We examined whether personality disorders (PDs) (any, cluster A/B/C) were associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in a population-based sample of Australian women ( n = 696). Personality and mood disorders were assessed using semi-structured diagnostic interviews. BMD was measured at the spine, hip, and total body using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (GE-Lunar Prodigy). Anthropometrics, medication use, physical conditions, and lifestyle fact…
Promotion of Wellbeing for Children of Parents With Mental Illness
Background: The main objective of this project is to create a research and intervention model to promote large-scale implementation and evaluations of generic very brief interventions for children of parents with mental disorders (COPMI). Feasible interventions for COPMI aged 0-18 years are highly needed, as this is a large high-risk group in society. Reducing behavioral problems and enhancing wellbeing for families with parents affected by any m…

Predictive Testing for Huntington's Disease
The discovery of a polymorphic DNA marker for Huntington's Disease (HD) in 1983, and the specific gene responsible in 1993, led to predictive testing programmes out of which came research into whether or not cognitive impairment was present presymptomatically in those at risk for HD. The results of these studies have been conflicting and inconclusive. Methodoiogical limitations have probably contributed to the differing findings. The present stud…
