  • Polyphony

Michael Tenzer, Alexander Rehding et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Critical…•2020

This chapter situates the extensive phenomenon of musical polyphony globally, taking typological and historical/material approaches in turn, and interspersing applications of comparative method that crosscut both. The typological method involves first considering the elemental aspects of musical sounds and the ways they can be combined, individually and in sequences, to create patterns we recognize as belonging to one of several polyphonic catego…

Balinese composer Dewa Alit (b. 1973) splits his time between home and abroad, absorbing many kinds of music. His latest gamelan work (2016) isNgejuk Memedi, from the Balinesengejuk, to chase, andmemedi, a feared phantom of the Balinese unseen world that takes human form. It animates his evolving desire for a "broader conception of what gamelan is, one based on its relationship to other cultures" (Alit in Tenzer 2011, 134), while submitting to th…

  • Meditations on Objective Aesthetics in World Music

    Michael Tenzer•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•2015•Citada por: 1

This essay opens a dialogue between ethnomusicology and neo- Darwinism as promulgated by biologist Richard Dawkins and others. The first half engages quantum physicist David Deutsch's much-discussed The Beginning of Infinity (2011), which integrates neo-Darwinism with the epistemology of objective knowledge developed by Karl Popper. Along the way Deutsch suggests that aesthetics with universal reach, akin to scientific facts, must be discoverable…

    Open Access•Michael Tenzer•ARTICLE•Circuit Musiques contemporaines•2011•Referencias: 1

The relationship between world music traditions and modernist art music in the European tradition is often explored in composers’ musical fusions, but the motivations and aesthetics of such works often receive less notice than those grounded in post-modern (minimalist, popular music) approaches. In this essay the author asserts a particular relationship between rigorous modern composition technique and the highly rational patterning of Indonesian…

    Michael Tenzer•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 11

M God, what has sound got to do with music?” quoth Charles Ives ([1920] 2004:54). Music—and musical time—are embodied phenomena, but every musical utterance filters through perception, and is subject to diverse and sometimes contradictory audiations depending on production, reception, context, history, affinity, and many other known factors. That is all semiotics. Yet despite the flux, there is the possibility of a systematic typology of time str…

  • Wayan Gandera et l’histoire cachée du Gamelan Gong Kebyar

    Michael Tenzer•ARTICLE•Archipel•2010

Wayan Gandera and the Hidden History of Gamelan Gong Kebyar In 2002 the notorious but celebrated Balinese gamelan drummer and composer Wayan Gandera passed away at the age of 69. • Gamelan, architecture sonore (et Gamelan mécanique)

    Open Access•Michael Tenzer•ARTICLE•Moussons•2005

Form and content are a universal yin and yang. While the subject of this brief essay is the above-named website’s content—a theory of structure and cultural meaning for the gamelan traditions of Bali, Central Java, and Sunda—the form of their presentation deserves its own consideration. A site’s content cannot be considered separately from the manner in which it is displayed, and this distinction necessitates an opening digression. Books and Webs…

  • Theory and Analysis of Melody in Balinese Gamelan

    Open Access•Michael Tenzer•ARTICLE•Music Theory Online•2000•Citada por: 1

Like many other musics with a primarily cyclic approach to melodic and rhythmic organization, Balinese gamelan music of the court or court-derived traditions relies upon on symmetries of one kind or another for structural coherence. Gamelan genres originating in other Balinese historical or cultural contexts have different, often more asymmetrical, kinds of organizing principles. In this article a set of Balinese concepts of melodic motion are us…
