Pentateuch and Pedagogy
This piece is an introduction to the collection of papers presented at the Society of Biblical Literature 2024 “Pentateuch and Pedagogy” session. The session was co‐chaired by the Pentateuch and the Historiography and the Hebrew Bible program units. A Pre-monarchic League in the Song of Deborah
This essay reflects an interest I share with Martin Noth, in the political history of Israel before the monarchy. I suggest that the Song of Deborah in Judges 5 is the Bible’s most important witness to this moment in the emergence of Israel as a polity, and that Judges 5:18-22 is of particular importance. These verses may preserve a tradition in which Yahweh’s people fought not against the Kings of Canaan, but rather as allies with this coalition…

On the Origins and Development of Greater Israel
This article works from biblical texts to track the emergence of a kingdom of Greater Israel that reached north of the Jezreel Valley, east of the Jordan River southward toward Bethel and west to the Mediterranean. The transition from little to Greater Israel involved two independent, contemporary spheres of political activity, each with its own character, history, and processes of political formation, both of which identified with the name Israe…
