Bundling Rapid Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Hepatitis C Virus Testing to Increase Receipt of Test Results
BACKGROUND: The overlapping human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemics disproportionately affect people with substance use disorders. However, many people who use substances remain unaware of their infection(s). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the efficacy of an on-site bundled rapid HIV and HCV testing strategy in increasing receipt of both HIV and HCV test results. RESEARCH DESIGN: Two-armed r…

The Potential for Glycemic Control Monitoring and Screening for Diabetes at Dental Visits Using Oral Blood
Objectives. We examined the potential for glycemic control monitoring and screening for diabetes in a dental setting among adults (n = 408) with or at risk for diabetes. Methods. In 2013 and 2014, we performed hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) tests on dried blood samples of gingival crevicular blood and compared these with paired “gold-standard” HbA1c tests with dried finger-stick blood samples in New York City dental clinic patients. We examined differenc…
Using Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation to Treat Depression in HIV-Infected Persons
Findings support feasibility and clinical potential of tDCS for HIV-MDD patients, and justify larger-sample, sham-controlled trials
Strauss et al. Respond
We appreciate the response to our article regarding the proportion and characteristics of patients who saw a dentist but not a primary care health provider in 2008. Like Greenberg and Glick, we also performed an earlier analysis using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data. We determined the proportion of individuals at increased risk of having diabetes, but who were unaware of that increased risk.1 We found that 93% of US…

Identifying Unaddressed Systemic Health Conditions at Dental Visits
We assessed the proportion and characteristics of patients who do not regularly visit general health care providers but do visit dentists and whose unaddressed systemic health conditions could therefore be identified by their dentist. Of the 26.0% of children and 24.1% of adults that did not access general outpatient health care in 2008, 34.7% and 23.1%, respectively, visited a dentist. They varied by census region, family income, and sociodemogr…
Enhancing Drug Treatment Program Staff's Self-Efficacy to Support Patients' HCV Needs
To increase HCV-related support for patients in substance abuse treatment programs, we implemented an on-site staff training in 16 programs throughout the United States. It aimed to increase participants' self-efficacy in assisting patients with their HCV-related needs. Findings indicate that participants' self-efficacy increased both 1- and 3-months post-training, resulting in providers' perceptions that they were better able to support patients…
Religious Congregations and the Growing Needs of Older Adults with HIV
By 2015, half of those with HIV will be over age 50. This group has a high level of needs, lacks social supports, and will need to access community services such as those provided by religious congregations. We examined whether disclosure to a congregation would pose a barrier to accessing congregational services among adults 50 and older with HIV (n = 819). Fifty-three percent had disclosed, but those who did not disclose generally remained enga…
The dental office visit as a potential opportunity for diabetes screening
As almost all individuals with periodontitis would have been recommended for diabetes screening, and many at-risk persons with periodontal disease recently visited a dentist, our data suggest that the dental visit provides an important potential venue for this screening

Drug treatment programs' HCV service delivery to their HCV positive clients
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the most common blood-borne infectious disease among drug users in the US. Drug treatment programs are ideally situated to assist their clients to obtain HCV medical and support services. Using data collected from 233 drug free and methadone maintenance treatment programs (MMTPs) throughout the US, this article examines the range of HCV services that treatment programs provide to their HCV positive clients. Fi…
Staff Perspectives on Facilitating the Implementation of Hepatitis C Services at Drug Treatment Programs
Drug users are at risk of acquiring the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Although ancillary services available to clients at drug treatment programs are often limited, some of these programs are providing HCV services. Presenting qualitative data, the authors describe the HCV education and/or support services available at four drug treatment programs and examine staff and client perspectives on factors that facilitated the implementation of these service…
HCV (Hepatitis C Virus) Pre-Test and Post-Test Counseling Services at Drug Treatment Programs
Although drug users are at risk for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, many clients in drug treatment programs remain uninformed about their HCV serostatus. Consistent with established Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing and counseling guidelines, recommendations for HCV testing procedures include the delivery of prevention messages targeting all high-risk clients. However, little research has determined whether HCV testing in these progra…

Assessing the Consequences of Using Self-report Data to Determine the Correlates of HIV Status
This article examines whether relationships between individual characteristics and HIV status can be identified when self-report data are used as a proxy for HIV serotest results. The analyses use data obtained from HIV serotests and face-to-face interviews with 7,256 out-of-treatment drug users in ten sites from 1992 to 1998. Relationships between 17 individual characteristics and HIV status (measured both by self-report and serotest results) we…

Women Offenders Who Use and Deal Methamphetamine
This article describes the patterns of methamphetamine use among a group of women offenders and their involvement in manufacturing and distributing the drug. All of the women (N = 64) had used methamphetamine frequently for some time during their lives and were recently mandated to a prison- and a community-based drug treatment program in Portland, Oregon. The vast majority of women used methamphetamine regularly during the past year, and most of…
Modeling Relationships Between Two Categorical Variables When Data Are Missing
Analysts evaluating the strengths of relationships between variables in behavioral science research must often contend with the problem of missing data. Analyses are typically performed using data for cases that are either complete in all the variables, or assume that the data are missing at random. Often, these approaches yield biased results. Using empirical data, the current work explores the implications and consequences of using various stat…
