  • Age of closure of the foramen of Huschke

    Open Access•Louise Humphrey, L T Humphrey et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2006•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 14

The foramen of Huschke is a dehiscence in the antero-inferior surface of the tympanic plate, which forms during the normal post-natal development of the temporal bone. Closure of the foramen is generally reported to take place by 5 years of age, although a persistent foramen has been observed in 0–67% of adult crania depending on the population. A persistent foramen of Huschke in adult life may be involved in abnormalities of the external auditor…

  • A blind test of mandibular morphology for sexing mandibles in the first few years of life

    Open Access•Louise Scheuer•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2002•Citada por: 18•Referencias: 3

Loth and Henneberg ([2001] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 115: 179–186) proposed that consistent shape differences exist between male and female juvenile mandibles which can be used to predict sex with an accuracy of 81%. A sample of known sex and age from the Spitalfields Collection was examined blind twice and resulted in an overall accuracy of only 64%. The tests also showed that: 1) the method sexed males more reliably than females; and 2) consisten…

  • The Ontogenetic Development of the Cervical Rib

    Open Access•Black, Sue Black et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1997•Referencias: 1

This paper describes a case of cervical rib that was observed in a skeleton from the St Bride's documented skeletal collection. The ontogenetic development of this phenomenon is discussed with reference to potential clinical symptoms including cyanosis, paraesthesia, muscular atrophy and even digital gangrene. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

  • Age Changes in the Clavicle

Open Access•Black, Sue Black et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996

Of all the long bones in the human skeleton, it is the clavicle which displays the longest period of growth-related activity, rendering it particularly useful for the estimation of age at death in the earlier years. However, because of the universal paucity of documented juvenile remains, most previous studies have, by necessity, not only been based on material of estimated age at death but also restricted to a narrow age range. The aim of the pr…

  • Occipitalization of the atlas with reference to its embryological development

Open Access•Black, Sue Black et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996

A skull is described from the St Bride's collection in which the atlas is fused to the occiput. The mechanism of occipitalization or assimilation is described in the light of the embryological development of the upper axial skeleton

  • Age estimation from the pars basilaris of the fetal and juvenile occipital bone

    Open Access•Louise Scheuer, Black et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1994•Citada por: 17•Referencias: 2

The pars basilaris of the human occipital bone is reported to be of considerable value for age estimation in juvenile skeletal remains between early fetal periods and 6 years of age, when it fuses to the remainder of the bone. The aim of this investigation was to examine the relationship between various dimensions of the pars basilaris, and assess their reliability for accurate age estimation. The results confirm the usefulness of the bone in thi…
