What Lies behind the Returns to Schooling
Do more educated workers earn higher wages partly because they have access to high-paying firms and occupations? We rely on linked employer-employee data to combine the estimation of AKM models with the decomposition of the returns to schooling. We exploit exogenous variation in education driven by changes in compulsory education. We show that education provides access to better-paying workplaces and occupations: 30 percent of the overall return …

A Simple Feasible Procedure to fit Models with High-dimensional Fixed Effects
In this article, we describe an iterative approach for the estimation of linear regression models with high-dimensional fixed effects. This approach is computationally intensive but imposes minimum memory requirements. We also show that the approach can be extended to nonlinear models and to more than two high-dimensional fixed effects.
Unemployment Benefits and Reservation Wages
This paper exploits survey information on reservation wages and data on actual wages from the European Community Household Panel to deduce, in the manner of Lancaster and Chesher, additional parameters of a stylized structural search model; specifically, reservation wage and transition/duration elasticities. The informational requirements of this approach are minimal, thereby facilitating comparisons between countries. Further, its policy content…
Six Ways to Leave Unemployment
This paper uses a unique Portuguese dataset to examine the effect of access to unemployment benefits (UBs) and their maximum potential duration on escape rates from unemployment. In examining the time profile of transitions out of unemployment, the principal contributions of the paper are twofold. First, it provides a detailed state space of potential outcomes: open‐ended employment, fixed‐term contracts, part‐time work, government‐provided jobs,…

Life Duration of New Firms
The authors follow firms created in Portuguese manufacturing in 1983 and study the determinants of their lifetime. One fifth of them died during the first year of their lives and only 50 percent survived for four years. Duration and limited-dependent variable models are employed to ascertain the relative importance of industry- and firm-specific variables to in explaining the period between firm birth and its disappearance from economic activity.…

Advance Notice and Unemployment
This paper examines how advance notice of layoff affects the incidence and duration of unemployment following displacement. The authors use the Displaced Worker Survey for 1988, which, unlike earlier surveys in the series, contains information on written notice. The results are mixed. Longer written notice may more than double the proportion of white-collar workers who move directly to new employment. But written notice has no such positive effec…
Problems of Sample Construction in Studies of the Effects of Unemployment Insurance on Unemployment Duration
Conventional analyses of the effect of unemployment insurance (UI) on unemployment duration have neglected the issue of sample construction. The authors show that such studies, by failing to account for job finding among those eligible for UI within intervals corresponding to the waiting time and filing delays associated with drawing benefits, overstate the expected unemployment duration of UI recipients while understating that of nonrecipients; …
On the Distributional Shape of Unemployment Duration
Using an accelerated failure time model, the extended generalized gamma distribution is deployed to discriminate among various special cases of that distribution. Displaced worker data from the January 1984 Current Population Survey are analyzed within a regression framework that accommodates the stochastic nature of the point of censoring associated with incomplete spells of unemployment. Not only are the regression parameters sensitive to distr…
Job Loss and Job Change
All three papers deal with important policy issues. Ruhm, whose analysis ranges the most widely, goes furthest in recommending policy activism. Podgursky and Swaim (P&S) are somewhat more restrained, but it is clear that they too favor special assistance for displaced workers. In our own paper we see advantage in workers being given notification of their impending redundancy in the specific context of plant closings and relocations, although our …
The Effect of Advance Notification of Plant Closings on Unemployment
Using data from the 1984 Displaced Worker Survey, the authors model the determinants of time without work following job displacement for a large sample of workers laid off because of plant shutdowns between 1979 and 1984. The major focus of the paper is on the role of advance notification in mitigating unemployment. The estimating procedure accommodates right censored observations stemming from continuing or open-ended spells of unemployment. Adv…
