  • Late prehistoric occupation along the Murgia plateau edge

Open Access•Giulia Recchia, Enrico Lucci et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2026

The Alta Murgia Archaeological Project investigates pre- and protohistoric settlement dynamics along the southern edge of the Murge plateau (south-eastern Italy). Surveys conducted between 2023 and 2024 revealed intensive exploitation of ecosystems at the interface between the lowlands and the plateau, and highlighted significant shifts in settlement patterns.

Open Access•Pasquale Acquafredda, Italo Maria Muntoni et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2026

This paper presents the compositional characterisation of obsidian artefacts from the archaeological site of Maddalena di Muccia (Marche, Central Italy). The assemblage, spanning the Early Neolithic to the Copper Age, was chemically and petrographically investigated using two non-destructive X-ray analytical instruments: a wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectrometer and a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrom…

Open Access•J Eric Thompson, Sofia Panella et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 6

When archaeologists discuss ‘ancestor cults’ or ‘ancestor veneration’, what this might entail in practice usually remains vague, leading to charges that the concept of ‘ancestors’ is often applied generically. In this article, the authors combine bioarchaeological, taphonomic, radiocarbon, and isotopic studies to explore the ritual practice of the selective retention, curation, and deposition of a group of human crania and mandibles. Between 5500…

  • A Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Early Neolithic Pyrotechnological Structures. The Case Study of Portonovo (Marche, Italy)

Open Access•C Conati Barbaro, Vanessa Forte et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2021

The introduction of agricultural practices fostered the development of specific technologies for the new subsistence practices and the production of new artefacts. Pyrotechnological structures such as ovens are part of the Neolithic equipment and accompanied the spread of agriculture from the Near East across Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. Ovens located within settlements – mainly domed, above-ground structures – have been traditionally linked…

The island of Antiparos belongs to the Aegean volcanic arc. The obsidian outcrops here contain pieces of excellent tool-making quality, but of small size making the raw material less attractive. Geological samples collected at Soros beach, at Blaco and Mastichi, in the southern part of the island, were analysed using Optical Microscopy, XRF (whole rock) and SEM-EDS (glass and microliths-microphenocrysts). Mid/Late Neolithic Serra d’Alto ware was widely diffused in southern Italy during the fifth millennium BC and shows homogeneous formal and technical features. Its wide distribution and frequent occurrence in funerary or cultual contexts have led many scholars to emphasise its exchange value. The issue of the circulation of finished pots rather than of a production model in different areas of Southern Italy, is explored by means of petrologic, min…

Our findings show that the exploitation and processing of milk varied across the region, although most communities began to exploit milk as soon as domesticates were introduced betwe…

The authors attempt to specify the diffusion pattern of the Impressed-Ware Neolithic (Impresso-cardial complex, ICC), from south-eastern Italy onto the French Mediterranean coasts. Using ChronoModel® software, a Bayesian model was built with sets of dates obtained on well-contextualised, short-lived samples. The results highlight a clear tightening of the chronology in the so-called nuclear area (Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria) and a pioneer dispe…
