Non-Foreign-Accented Speech in Adult Second Language Learners
The findings of this study add to the growing number of reports in which investigators claim to have located adult second language learners who, under rigorous test conditions, manage to pass as native speakers in L2. The aims of this paper were two, first, to provide a detailed account of how we tested and qualified our Anglophones as native-like speakers of French and, second, to suggest that, interesting as our data were, more questions emerge…
Phonological Asymmetry in Second-Language Learning and Performance
This paper reports on the results of a study in which adult second-language learners' performance on phonological perception tasks was contrasted with their performance in articulatory production. The project was a continuation of earlier work in which the writer found no evidence for language-learning deficits at the level of perception and notable asymmetry between phonological perception and articulatory production in L2. The objectives of the…
On the Adult's Ability to Acquire Phonology
During the preparation phase of research designed to test the strong version of the critical period hypothesis, the author noted a marked discrepancy between the perceptive and the productive performance of several English-French bilinguals who had evaluated the text instruments. Although these bilinguals spoke French with an English accent,; most were able to match the performance of native-speaking francophones on the initial version of the For…
Towards a Theory of Language Learning Ability
In this paper, the problem of foreign or second language learning ability in adults is examined with special attention to the "critical period" hypothesis. Although data from several studies are reviewed, discussion centers around the appropriateness of traditional research methodology in the area. The author begins with a summary of the four most frequently discussed positions on foreign or second language aptitude as they appear in the literatur…
