The supply of copper to the settlement of Leceia (Portugal) and the Estremadura region during the third millennium BC
The Chalcolithic settlement of Leceia (Portugal) has one of the largest collections of copper artefacts and metallurgical debris in the Portuguese Estremadura. However, the absence of ores and smelting remains suggests that local metallurgical operations were related to the production of artefacts. In fact, the metal assemblage includes several fragments of flat axes, most of them with traces of sectioning, which may have been used as ingots. In …
A provenance study on indigenous and Phoenician bronzes
The diachronic evolution of the Early Iron Age copper-based metallurgy in southern Portugal is behind the research now carried out with the aim of determining the copper provenance in bronzes from two partially coeval settlements. Castro dos Ratinhos shows a metallurgy of Late Bronze Age indigenous tradition, while Quinta do Almaraz with a strong Phoenician influence, presents a more evolved technology, apparently affiliated with regions borderin…
Early Iron Age metal trade networks of the workshop of Cabeço Redondo (southern Portugal). Tracing the origin of lead of ternary bronzes
The conversion into calendar dates of radiocarbon ages of marine organisms collected on the coastal waters of the Canary Islands. The new Marine20 calibration curve
Recently, a new calibration curve for marine radiocarbon dates (Marine20) has been published. Since the modelling carried out for its setting up, as well as the database used, are different from those utilised for the previous curves (Marine04, Marine09, Marine13), it becomes necessary to calculate new values of the marine reservoir effect (ΔR20) for the oceanic region under study. This work precisely presents the reliable ΔR20 values for the coa…
Non-invasive analysis of faience necklace beads and scarabs from Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age necropolises in southern Portugal
In this work, non-invasive techniques (XRD and microPIXE) were used to study 14 necklace beads associated with human inhumations from the Late Bronze Age (10th-9th century BC) hypogea of Monte da Ramada 1 (Aljustrel), from the Early Iron Age (7th-6th century BC) necropolises of Palhais (Beja), Montinhos 6 (Serpa) and Corte Margarida (Aljustrel), and a blue bead from the Orientalising settlement (8th century BC) of Quinta do Almaraz (Almada). Two …

O concheiro do Lisandro (Mafra, Lisboa, Portugal)
The materialization of an iconography
A metallic artefact recorded in a LBA/EIA context in Northern Portugal, which can be one of the first known material representations of the so-called Southwestern Bronze Age “anchoriform” or “anchor idol”, is presented. The artefact comes from an intrusive LBA/EIA context into a MBA level at the hilltop settlement of Fraga dos Corvos (Macedo de Cavaleiros, Bragança, Northern Portugal). It is made of a ternary bronze alloy (Cu-Sn-Pb), consequently…
New evidence on Iron Age bronze metallurgy in southwestern Iberian Peninsula
Foundry in the Late Bronze Age Baiões/Santa Luzia Cultural Group
During the last quarter of a century, progress on the understanding of metallurgical practices of the Baiões / Santa Luzia cultural group of Central Portugal produced results that allowed us to better understand and characterize a fundamental cultural group of the Iberian Late Bronze Age (LBA). However, the study of the foundry moulds lacks a convenient interpretive synthesis. The discovery of a new exemplar of metallic mould for single-faceted p…

Microanalytical study of copper ores from the Chalcolithic settlement of São Pedro (Portugal)
Copper ores recovered at the third millennium bce settlement of São Pedro, Portugal, were characterized by micro‐Raman spectroscopy, micro‐energy dispersive X‐ray spectrometry (micro‐ EDXRF) and micro‐particle‐induced X‐ray emission spectrometry (micro‐PIXE). The collection shows the common presence of secondary copper minerals (malachite, pseudomalachite and libethenite) combined with iron oxyhydroxides (hematite and goethite), while arsenic‐ric…
The Composition of the São Brás Copper Hoard in Relation to the Bell Beaker Metallurgy in the South‐western Iberian Peninsula
A large ceramic vessel was discovered at São Brás (southern Portugal) containing a metallic hoard from the Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age period. These weapons and tools were characterized by microanalytical techniques as being composed of copper with varying arsenic contents (2.2 ± 1.6 wt%) and minor amounts of lead, bismuth and iron. The collection shows a clear association between daggers and copper with a higher arsenic content, which can be e…
Early Imports in the Late Bronze Age of South‐Western Iberia
The composition and manufacture of Late Bronze Age metallic artefacts from funerary and domestic contexts of southern inland Portugal was studied. The prevailing trend comprises binary bronzes (10.3 ± 2.1 wt% Sn) showing deformed equiaxial grains, annealing twins and slip bands. The alloy composition is somewhat independent of artefact type, while the manufacture seems to rely on artefact function and the skilfulness of the metallurgist. The tech…
