From Stones to Structures
The megalithic funerary monuments of Menjez (Akkar, northern Lebanon), dated to the Late Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age, display a remarkable architectural diversity that reflects a localized process of innovation within the Levant. Conducted as part of the Swiss-Polish MEG-A project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and Narodowe Centrum Nauki – titled “First megalith builders in the Northern Levant” (2022–2026) (202350–2020/39/I…
Road to encounters
Although thousands of prehistoric standing stones have been recorded across Iberia, the lack of associated detailed contextual data allows ongoing debate about their possible functions. Following the chance discovery of a ‘diademated’ stela in 2018, excavations at Las Capellanías (Cañaveral de León, Huelva), in south-west Spain, led to the discovery of two more stelae and facilitated the compilation of vital contextual information. Here, the auth…

Megalithic architecture in the Levant
The phenomenon of funerary megalithic architecture in the Levant presents a variety of building techniques and morphologies characteristic of the region. This diversity brings inherent complexity in the definitions and classifications of megalithic monuments. The reasons for these difficulties lie in terminological and typological divergences across different cultures and epochs. By adopting a comparative approach between research conducted in Eu…
Exploring Levantine megalithic building techniques
The aim of this paper is to present a new methodological approach for the study of megalithic buildings in the Levant by presenting the case study of the megalithic monument ST_004 from the cemetery of Qana Maabour in Menjez (Akkar, Lebanon). Conducted within the framework of the MEG-A Project — First Megalith in the Northern Levant (2022–2026) — led by T. Steimer-Herbet and Z. Wygnańska, this research aims to characterize the cultural and techni…
The Standing Stone of Velmaio (Varese, North-Western Lombardy, Italy). From an Erratic Boulder to a Megalith
A standing stone was found near Velmaio (Italy), on the valley floor of the Torrente Bévera. The analysis of its morphology and of traces on its surface on all faces showed that the block is not in an original position but was placed later in its vertical position. The standing stone is made of a dolomite breccia. The texture and, in particular, the lithological composition of the breccia corresponds to that of the Invorio Breccia known only from…
The Levantine Megalithic Building Techniques
The aim of this paper is to present the methodology used to study the megalithic architecture of Menjez's monuments (Akkar, Lebanon), as part of the MEG-A Project - "First megalith builders in the northern Levant" (2022-2025). Twenty-four monuments have been investigated since 2018. The primary objective is to pioneer a comprehensive understanding of the unique Levantine megalithic building techniques and re-establish the "chaînes opératoires," b…
Discovery of a multi-chambered long cairn at Goasseac'h, Carhaix-Plouguer, central Brittany, France
The discovery of a multi-chambered long cairn in central Brittany dating to the Middle Neolithic period challenges previous conceptions of the coastal focus of Neolithic society in this region
Le douzième dolmen de Barnenez
The southern tumulus of Barnenez, situated on the north coast of Finistère, is one of the most famous Breton megaliths. It was excavated during the 1950s by P.-R. Giot, and the results published in 1987. Since then, data concerning this well-preserved monument have not been updated with the new knowledge regarding megaliths gained over the last three decades. In 2010, an international research program began on this tumulus, integrating an ongoing…
Life and death of Angoumoisin-type dolmens in west-central France Architecture and evidence of the reuse of megalithic orthostats
