  • Labor Migration, Capital Accumulation, and the Structure of Rural Labor Markets

Taryn Dinkelman, Grace Kumchulesi et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2024

Between 1967 and 1974, a bilateral treaty increased circular labor migration from Malawi to South Africa by 200%, bringing over 53 million USD in earnings into origin communities. A deadly migrant worker plane crash in 1974 ended these flows and led to migrant repatriation. We study how this shock affected local labor markets. In regions receiving more migrant capital after the crash, workers, particularly women, shifted from farming into non-far…

  • Time Use and Gender in Africa in Times of Structural Transformation

    Open Access•Taryn Dinkelman, L Rachel Ngai•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2022•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 2

Many African countries are still in the early stages of structural transformation. Typically, as economies move through the structural transformation, activities once conducted within the household are outsourced to the market. This has particular implications for women's time use. In this paper, we document that current patterns of female time use in home production in several African countries closely resemble historical time use patterns in th…

  • Why are fewer married women joining the work force in rural India? A decomposition analysis over two decades

  • Long‐Run Health Repercussions of Drought Shocks

    Open Access•Taryn Dinkelman•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2017•Citada por: 20•Referencias: 42

I present new evidence from Africa that droughts are an important component of long‐run variation in health human capital. Using Census data, I estimate effects of early childhood drought exposure on later‐life disabilities among South Africans confined to homelands during apartheid. By exploiting 40 years of quasi‐random variation in local droughts experienced by different cohorts in different districts, I find that drought exposure in infancy r…

  • Evidence on the impact of minimum wage laws in an informal sector

  • The Effects of Rural Electrification on Employment

    Taryn Dinkelman•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2011

This paper estimates the impact of electrification on employment growth by analyzing South Africa's mass roll-out of electricity to rural households. Using several new data sources and two different identification strategies (an instrumental variables strategy and a fixed effects approach), I find that electrification significantly raises female employment within five years. This new infrastructure appears to increase hours of work for men and wo…

  • Investing in Schooling In Chile

    Taryn Dinkelman, Claudia Martínez A

We investigate the impacts of providing low-income Chilean adolescents with information about how to finance higher education and ask whether providing parents with the same information magnifies the effects on schooling outcomes. We randomly assigned eighth graders and some parents to receive information about aid for higher education. Exposure to information raised college preparatory high school enrollment, primary school attendance, and finan…
