  • Multicore Study of Upper Holocene Mire Development in West-Frisia, Northern Netherlands

Open Access•Bas Van Geel, Otto Brinkkemper et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2020

We studied twelve late Holocene organic deposits in West-Frisia, The Netherlands. Pollen, spores, non-pollen palynomorphs, mosses, other botanical macrofossils and insect remains were recorded for reconstructions of changing environmental conditions. Eastern West-Frisia was a cultivated landscape during the Bronze Age, but it became a freshwater wetland in the Late Bronze Age. In most of our sites, radiocarbon dates show that time transgressive i…

  • Evidence for the diet and habitat of two late Pleistocene mastodons from the Midwest, USA

Open Access•Hilary H Birks, Bas Van Geel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

We analyzed intestinal contents of two late-glacial mastodons preserved in lake sediments in Ohio (Burning Tree mastodon) and Michigan (Heisler mastodon). A multi-proxy suite of macrofossils and microfossils provided unique insights into what these individuals had eaten just before they died and added significantly to knowledge of mastodon diets. We reconstructed the mastodons’ habitats with similar multi-proxy analyses of the embedding lake sedi…

  • A multidisciplinary study of a Late Pleistocene arctic ground squirrel ( Urocitellus parryii ) midden from Yukon, Canada

    Open Access•Bram W Langeveld, Bram Langeveld et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

Middens (nests and caches) of Late Pleistocene arctic ground squirrels ( Urocitellus parryii ) that are preserved in the permafrost of Beringia archive valuable paleoecological data. Arctic ground squirrels selectively include the plant material placed in middens. To account for this selectivity bias, we used a multi-proxy approach that includes ancient DNA (aDNA) and macro- and microfossil analyses. Here, we provide insight into Pleistocene vege…
