Strengthening field epidemiology capacity in Canada
Background Field epidemiology training programs (FETPs) play a critical role in strengthening public health capacity for surveillance, outbreak investigation, and evidence-based decision making. The Canadian Field Epidemiology Program (CFEP), established in 1975, was the first program outside of the United States. This study presents findings from a mixed-methods evaluation examining program outputs, outcomes, and impacts. Methods Canadian field …
Building epidemiological capacity to strengthen health systems
Introduction Papua New Guinea (PNG) has implemented a three-tiered Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) to strengthen their public health workforce. The first advanced (extended) level FETP (aFETPNG) commenced in 2019. This study evaluates the outputs, outcomes and impacts of aFETPNG. Methods Guided by an FETP impact evaluation framework, a mixed-methods evaluation was conducted to assess program effectiveness and identify opportunities for…
The barriers and enablers of outbreak reporting in the Asia-Pacific region
Outbreak reporting is thought to be subject to technical, or capacity, barriers that physically hinder reporting and non-technical barriers, such as the threat of economic losses, that discourage governments from reporting. While technical barriers to reporting have been extensively explored, there is less evidence for the effects of non-technical barriers, particularly at the subnational level. To better understand the impact of both technical a…
The development of a caregiver intervention to address child mental health in settings of complex humanitarian emergency
A caregiver intervention to support child mental health in CHEs is available. It's development using multi-method, co-design processes will ensure its relevance and acceptability to target populations. Further research to evaluate the effectiveness and long-term effectiveness of the intervention is warranted
Priority indicators for evaluating the impact of field epidemiology training programs – results of a global modified Delphi study
This study presents the first FETP impact evaluation framework with a comprehensive list of evaluation indicators for FETPs. This list of indicators is intended as a resource to promote and enhance the evaluation of FETPs and thus improve these important training programs which aim to strengthen national, regional and global health security
Malaria in Cambodia
There has been a noted decrease in P. falciparum cases in 2019, suggesting that an intensification plan should be maintained. A decline in P. vivax cases was also noted, although less pronounced. Interventions aimed at preventing new infections of P. vivax and relapses should be prioritized. All detected malaria cases should be captured by the national surveillance system to avoid misleading trends
The Effect of Covid-19 on Mental Health and Wellbeing in a Representative Sample of Australian Adults
There is minimal knowledge about the impact of large-scale epidemics on community mental health, particularly during the acute phase. This gap in knowledge means we are critically ill-equipped to support communities as they face the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to provide data urgently needed to inform government policy and resource allocation now and in other future crises. The study was the first to survey a representative …

Our findings demonstrate the universality of symptoms of psychological distress whilst simultaneously highlighting the importance of recognizing the cultural, spiritual and contextual framework within which psychological distress is understood and manifest. Co-constructed models of community based mental health services are needed
Trauma in the Kashmir Valley and the mediating effect of stressors of daily life on symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety
Our findings highlight that not only do we need to move beyond a trauma-focussed approach to addressing psychological distress in populations affected by protracted conflict but we must also move beyond focussing on daily stressors as explanatory mediators
Validation of mental health screening instruments in the Kashmir Valley, India
The present study aimed to culturally adapt, translate, and validate the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25) and the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire-Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms Checklist (HTQ-16) prior to use in a cross-sectional mental health population survey in the Kashmir Valley. Cultural adaptation and translation of the HSCL-25 and the HTQ-16 employed multiple forms of transcultural validity check. The HSCL-25 and HTQ-16 were compared aga…
A Systematic Review on the Impact of Internal Remittances on Poverty and Consumption in Developing Countries
This paper reviews the current literature on the usage and impact of internal remittances on recipient households in low‐income countries. A systematic review was conducted using six electronic and four informal databases. Using narrative synthesis, we reviewed 18 studies. The results of the review provide strong evidence revealing that internal migration is an important poverty reduction strategy with remittances having the greatest impact on th…
