A Granite Tool Producing Community on the Western Periphery of Pacbitun, Belize
Between 2012 and 2014, a crew from the Pacbitun Regional Archaeological Project (PRAP) excavated a small mound located on the western periphery of the Pacbitun site, a medium-sized ancient Maya center located in west-central Belize. In South Africa there has been relatively little consideration of the informal employment offered to domestic household workers and gardeners. Here we report on the number and profile of gardeners employed by private households and the wage and satisfaction rates in 12 towns of the Eastern Cape. Absorbed Residue Evidence for Prehistoric Datura Use in the American Southeast and Western Mexico
Absorbed residue studies have been used in subsistence research for decades. Only more recently have the chemical methods employed been used to explore the consumption of ritual concoctions such as those including cacao, yaupon holly, and alcohol. An iconographic exploration of the “rattlesnake” gorgets of eastern Tennessee
Compared to other gorget styles and themes made during the Mississippian period, the so-called rattlesnake gorgets of eastern Tennessee have been found in fairly large numbers. Stylistically, Muller assigned these gorgets to the temporally related Lick Creek and Citico styles, while Crawford's recent work has argued for substyles within. Recent Geophysical Investigations and New Interpretations of Etowah’s Palisade
We discuss excavations conducted at Etowah's palisade wall in 1962 and 1995 and geophysical data collected in 2008. Artifact collections indicate the wall was built during the Wilbanks phases (A.D. 1250–1375) and most likely during the Late Wilbanks phase (A.D. 1325–1375). Radiocarbon dates obtained from charred wall posts are ambiguous but do not contradict a Late Wilbanks phase date. We explore estimates of the labor required to build the palis…
