Dragutin Gorjanovic Kramberger, Krapina and Vindija sites and their role in Neanderthal research
The two Croatian sites that have yielded Neanderthal skeletal remains – Krapina (Husnjakov brijeg) and Vindija Cave – have played a pivotal role in the study of human evolution and the development of modern palaeoanthropology as a scientific discipline. Excavations at Husnjakov brijeg in Krapina, conducted by Dragutin Gorjanovic-Kramberger between 1899 and 1905, produced one of the largest Neanderthal skeletal collections, representing individual…
Carbon and nitrogen isotopic analysis of the Middle/Late Bronze individuals from Bezdanjača Cave, Lika region, Croatia
Reconstructing an Individual’s Life History by Using Multi-Analytical Approach
The study aims to reconstruct the life history of an individual whose skeleton was recovered during the excavation of the late medieval Pauline monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Moslavina Mountain, Croatia. The monastery was one of the most important ecclesiastical centres in continental Croatia during the 14th/15th centuries CE and was abandoned between 1520 and 1544 due to fear of imminent Ottoman attacks. The inscription and coat of arms…

Terenska istraživanja na nalazištu Abri Kontija 002 u sezoni 2022. i 2023
Rad donosi rezultate arheoloških istraživanja nalazišta Abri Kontija 002 u sezoni 2022. i 2023. Istraživanja su provedena u sklopu projekta „Prapovijesni lovci i sakupljači u Istri i obližnjim regijama: obrasci života tijekom kasnog pleistocena“ (PREHISTRIA). Tijekom istraživanja pronađen je brojan arheološki materijal iz vremena kasnog pleistocena, uzeti su uzorci za provođenje različitih vrsta analiza (radiometrijsko datiranje, sediment za aDNA…
Enamel thickness per masticatory phases (ETMP)
Many anthropological studies have examined the functional implications of enamel thickness in human dental crowns. Despite limitations, Enamel thickness (ET) values are still used to infer taxonomic attribution in the genus Homo, and to identify mechanisms of functional adaptation against macrowear. However, only a few studies have tried to describe the possible relationship between ET and dental wear patterns in permanent lower first molars (M1)…

Mass violence in Copper Age Europe
OBJECTIVES: To provide a comprehensive analysis of perimortem cranial injuries found on human remains from the Eneolithic (ca. 4200 BCE) mass grave discovered at Potočani, Croatia, to test if the assemblage is a result of a deliberate violent episode on a massive scale. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Standard bioarchaeological analysis, including inventory of the preserved elements, minimum number of individuals, sex determination, age at death, as well …
A case of probable interpersonal violence from the Early Neolithic site at Smilčić, Croatia
Archaeological excavations at the Early/Middle Neolithic site at Smilčić‐Barica in 2016/2017 revealed skeletal remains of three people. Of particular interest is the skeleton from Grave 2, directly dated to 5616 and 5485 cal BCE, that is, to the Early Neolithic Impresso Pottery Culture. The skeleton was positioned on its left side, in a crouched position with bended knees and its right arm flexed at the elbow. Based on metric and morphological ob…
Beyond the Bounds of Western Europe
Something Old, Something New
In this paper we present three prehistoric cases (two previously reported and one recently discovered) of trepanation from Croatia: Rudine, Bezdanjaca and Jagodnjak, all dated to the Bronze Age. By using a detailed macroscopic analysis as well as radiographic imaging (x-ray and CT scanning) of the skulls, we provide a new assessment and interpretation for this type of surgical intervention during the Bronze Age. The first case was that of an adul…
Paleodiet and health in a mass burial population
This paper presents the results of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses on human remains uncovered from Potočani, a Copper Age (Eneolithic) mass burial site in continental Croatia. The remains of at least 41individuals were uncovered in a pit in 2007 during rescue excavations in Požeško-Slavonska county. Skeletal evidence of violence and the disorganized arrangement of bodies suggest that burial took place over a short period of time. Radi…
High data density electrical resistivity tomography survey for sediment depth estimation at the Romuald's Cave site
Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys were conducted at the Velika Pećina near Kličevica and Romuald's Cave sites in Croatia in 2014 and 2015. The goal of the surveys was to estimate sediment depth to bedrock. However, neither survey produced reliable results at the 0.5 m probe spacing. In 2017, the Romuald's Cave site was revisited utilizing a high data density survey of 0.1 m probe spacing. All three surveys were conducted with a GeoS…

New research on the Late Pleistocene in the Lim Channel, Istria
As a part of the multidisciplinary project entitled 'Archaeological Investigations into the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene of the Lim Channel, Istria', archaeological research has been conducted at four sites: Romuald's Cave, Abri Kontija 002, Pećina at Rovinjsko Selo and Lim 001 (Figure 1). There is much debate on issues related to biological and behavioural continuity, to patterns of changes and adaptations during this crucial period, and …
Prehistoric massacre revealed. Perimortem cranial trauma from Potočani, Croatia
During archaeological rescue excavations carried out in 2007 at Potočani in continental Croatia, a pit containing numerous human skeletal remains (MNI = 41) was discovered. The remains were mostly articulated but also commingled and showed no clear pattern of organization. There were no associated artifacts, just a few pottery fragments probably belonging to the Copper Age Lasinja Culture (c. 4300 to 3950 BCE). Anthropological analyses suggest th…

New discoveries and interpretations of hominid fossils and artifacts from Vindija Cave, Croatia
Beginning with excavations during the 1970s, Vindija Cave (Croatia) has yielded significant Middle and Upper Paleolithic fossil and archaeological finds. We report on seven recently identified hominid fossils, a newly associated partial hominid cranial vault from level G(3), nine possible bone retouchers, and a revised interpretation of the Mousterian artifact assemblage from the site. This new information reinforces our knowledge of the complex …

The Middle Paleolithic from Mujina Pećina, Dalmatia, Croatia
Mujina Pećina in Dalmatia, Croatia is the only systematically excavated and well-dated Middle Paleolithic cave site in the eastern Adriatic. Its stratigraphic sequence covers the period between 45 and 39 uncalibrated years ka. Results of sedimentological, lithic, faunal, and paleobotanical analyses of the upper levels (Levels B, C, D1, and D2) show that this was a hunting site only sporadically visited by humans. During these occupation episodes …
