Komunikacja jako szansa i więź-zobowiązanie w wypowiedziach mieszkańców Gambii na temat migracji do Europy
Artykuł zawiera analizę roli komunikacji w życiu Gambijczyków migrujących do Europy. Bazę empiryczną stanowi 60 wywiadów pogłębionych przeprowadzonych w Gambii, uzupełnionych o obserwacje etnograficzne. Analiza koncentruje się na relacjach między migrantami, ich rodzinami, społecznościami w Gambii i Europie oraz na przekształceniach relacji zachodzących w kontekście mobilności międzykontynentalnej. Tracing the story of a Gambian migrant’s clandestine journey to Europe, his failure and return, and analysing other Gambians’ decisions about undocumented migration, I analyse the role of destiny and ‘luck’ in these processes. This text analyses religious interpretations of the uncertainty of migratory journeys - documented and clandestine - from West Africa to Europe, based on beliefs in Islamic destiny, 'luck', witchcraft and sorcery in the Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. In the context of transnational migration, many non‐migrant men in Guinea‐Bissau and The Gambia postulate a ‘transcontinental’ version of polygyny, wishing to have one wife in Europe and another in Africa.
