  • Before It Gets Better

    Open Access•Andrea Bassanini, Federico Cingano•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 40

The article exploits long time series of industry-level data in a group of OECD countries to analyze the short-term labor market effects of reforms that lower barriers to entry and dismissal costs. Estimates show that both policies induce non-negligible transitory employment losses. The strength of these effects varies depending on the underlying industry and labor market structure, and on cyclical conditions: The employment cost of deregulation …

  • Employment Protection Legislation, Capital Investment and Access to Credit

    Open Access•Federico Cingano, Marco Leonardi et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2016•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 44

This article estimates the causal impact of dismissal costs on capital deepening and productivity, exploiting a reform that introduced unjust‐dismissal costs in Italy for firms below 15 employees, leaving firing costs unchanged for larger firms. We show that the rise in firing costs induced an increase in the capital‐labour ratio and a decline in total factor productivity in small firms relative to larger firms. Our results indicate that capital …

  • Service Regulation and Growth

    Open Access•Guglielmo Barone, Federico Cingano•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2011•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 24

We study the effects of anti-competitive service regulation by examining whether OECD countries with less anti-competitive regulation see a better economic performance of manufacturing industries using less-regulated services more intensively. Our results indicate that lower service regulation translates into faster value added, productivity, and export growth of downstream service-intensive industries. The negative growth-effect of anti-competit…

  • Identifying the Sources of Local Productivity Growth

Open Access•Federico Cingano, Fabiano Schivardi•ARTICLE•Journal of the European Economic…•2004

Using firm-level based TFP indicators (as opposed to employment-based proxies) we estimate the effects of alternative sources of dynamic externalities at the local level. In contrast to previous empirical work, we find that industrial specialization and scale indicators affect TFP growth positively, while neither product variety nor the degree of local competition have any effect. Employment-based regressions yield nearly the opposite results, in…
