  • The Causes of Iran's 1953 Coup

    Open Access•Mark J Gasiorowski, Mark Gasiorowski•ARTICLE•Iranian Studies•2012•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 1

This article presents a detailed criticism of Darioush Bayandor's book Iran and the CIA . Bayandor argues that certain Shi'a clerics, rather than the US Central Intelligence Agency, were the main actors responsible for overthrowing Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq in August 1953. Bayandor presents no major new evidence to support this claim. He gives too much weight to certain statements, draws unwarranted inferences from others, and disc…

  • Mohammad Mosaddeq and the 1953 Coup in Iran

    L Carl Brown, Mark J Gasiorowski et al.•ARTICLE•Foreign Affairs•2004•Citada por: 18

Mohammad Mosaddeq is widely regarded as the leading champion of secular democracy and resistance to foreign domination in Iran's modern history. Mosaddeq became prime minister of Iran in May 1951 and promptly nationalized its British-controlled oil industry, initiating a bitter confrontation between Iraq and Britain that increasingly undermined Mossaddeq's position. He was finally overthrown in August 1953 in a coup that was organized and led by …

    Open Access•Mark J Gasiorowski, Mark Gasiorowski•ARTICLE•International Journal Middle East…•2002•Citada por: 5

On the night of 9–10 July 1980, several hundred active-duty and retired Iranian paratroopers made their way to the Nuzhih air-force base near the city of Hamadan to initiate a coup d'état against Iran's fledgling Islamic regime. The Iranian government had learned of the plot, and many of the paratroopers were arrested as they arrived at the base. Several hundred additional participants in the plot were arrested in the following days. Those arrest…

In this study, the author examines how inflation and economic growth differ in more- and less-democratic regimes and in new and mature democracies. The analysis is based on a panel research design featuring annual data from a large sample of underdeveloped countries and two-way, fixed-effects regression analysis. The author's central finding is that more-democratic countries have higher inflation and slower growth than less-democratic countries. …

Democratic consolidation is the process by which a newly established democratic regime becomes sufficiently durable that a return to nondemocratic rule is no longer likely. The authors examine a wide range of structural factors that may affect democratic consolidation in Third World countries, using three indicators of consolidation and multivariate statistical techniques. Recent scholarship on democratization has produced several dominant hypotheses concerning the role of institutional design in promoting stable democracy. This article tests these hypotheses by examining the outcomes of 56 transitions to democracy in the Third World between 1930 and 1995. The authors' analysis contradicts recent scholarship on institutional design by finding that the choice of constitutional type (presidential or parliamentary) is…

A recent study presenting empirical evidence in support of this simple hypothesis is first criticized on methodological grounds. A reanalysis of the author's data, which takes these criticisms into account, fails to confirm the author's original findings. The simple hypothesis is then retested us…

    Open Access•Mark J Gasiorowski, Mark Gasiorowski•ARTICLE•Journal of Interamerican Studies…•1986•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

Dependency Theory has become a major paradigm for understanding Latin American politics. Based on the premises that the study of politics must begin with analysis of underlying socio-economic structures, and that these structures cannot be understood without considering a country's role in the world economy, dependency theory provides a cogent analytical framework that has been upheld in numerous empirical studies. The model of politics presented…
