Do political systems affect economic outcomes? The geography of inward FDI and its relationships with growth and inequality
This paper explores the complex interplay between political systems, foreign direct investment (FDI), and income inequality. Building on Acemoglu and Robinson’s Nobel Prize-winning work on institutions, we develop a framework to analyze governments’ political incentives to attract FDI. We argue that highly entrenched autocracies, facing little internal competition for rents, and democracies with strong political competition, eager to secure growt…
Restrictive immigration policies and MNE innovation
High-skill migrant workers significantly contribute to advanced economies by directly generating knowledge-intensive assets and serving as bridges to knowledge in their origin countries. However, rising populist sentiment has led to increased immigration restrictions in wealthy economies like the U.S. and the European Union. This study examines the impact of the 2004 H-1B visa cap reduction on U.S.-based multinational enterprises (MNEs). We use a…

International connectedness and local disconnectedness
The global connectivity of regional innovation systems in Italy
The study evaluates the role of global connectivity in a country's regional innovation systems, using Italy as the study context. Two forms of innovation connectivity are analysed: domestic Italian entities connecting to external knowledge sources (‘reaching-out’ processes) and foreign entities connecting to knowledge resources within Italian regional innovation systems (‘reaching-in’ processes). It is found that Italian regional innovation syste…
Location, collocation and innovation by multinational enterprises
The distribution of creative economic activity over space has been viewed from three distinct perspectives: International business focuses on the multinational enterprise and the location of activities across national borders; economic geography studies the characteristics of the location site; and innovation scholars are mainly concerned with the technologies and knowledge that arises from the interaction of location and the creativity of actors…
Overcoming frictions in transnational knowledge flows
The increasing interconnection of local, trans-local and transnational knowledge networks is the outcome of the coevolution of (i) knowledge centers, typically city regions, (ii) epistemic communities that are grounded in and connect these regions and (iii) firms, usually multinational enterprises (MNEs). This interaction has created opportunities for innovation, but it is also impeded by a range of frictions that arise in the process of integrat…
Competitiveness and connectivity in design innovation
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how firms achieve competitiveness by implementing design-driven innovation. Design/methodology/approach This paper is a detailed longitudinal analysis of the design innovation underpinning the Norwegian furniture industry. Using a data set spanning 40 years (1976-2015) of design patents by both Norwegian firms and inventors, the authors map the coinventor connectivity of the design-innovation cluste…
On the geography of emerging industry technological networks
We study an emerging industry’s technological network in which the patented technologies of the industry are connected to the geographic locations of the inventors. Our research context is the global wind turbine industry. The network maps the geography of the industry’s patented technologies over time. It shows the locations’ patenting activities in different technologies, centered around the core classes of electricity and aerodynamics. These a…
Competitive Dynamics in High‐Technology Industries
Competition may be the most important determinant of firm performance.
From Shallow Resource Pools to Emerging Clusters
Mudambi R. and Santangelo G. D. From shallow resource pools to emerging clusters: the role of multinational enterprise subsidiaries in peripheral areas, Regional Studies. Pressured by heightened competition, multinational enterprises (MNEs) are discovering pockets of resources in non-traditional locations. This study proposes a dynamic model explaining the role of MNE subsidiary entry timing, entry mode and mandate in the process of transforming …
Clusters, Connectivity and Catch-up
In this article, we make two important contributions to the literature on clusters. First, we provide a broader theory of cluster connectivity that has hitherto focused on organization-based pipelines and MNE subsidiaries, by including linkages in the form of personal relationships. Second, we use the lens of social network theory to derive a number of testable propositions. We propose that global linkages with decentralized network structures ha…
Introduction
This article discusses the current links between international trade theory, economic geography and strategy and international business. We offer a way forward for building further links between these literatures that focusses on the notions of place, space and organization, and we document how the papers in this special issue contribute to this debate
Location, control and innovation in knowledge-intensive industries
The rising share of intangibles in economies worldwide highlights the crucial role of knowledge-intensive and creative industries in current and future wealth generation. The recognition of this trend has led to intense competition in these industries. At the micro-level, firms from both advanced and emerging economies are globally dispersing their value chains to control costs and leverage capabilities. The geography of innovation is the outcome…
MNE competence‐creating subsidiary mandates
The determinants of R&D intensity differ between subsidiaries in a multinational enterprise (MNE). Previous literature suggests that whether a subsidiary achieves a competence‐creating output mandate depends on the qualities of its location. R&D strategies in competence‐creating subsidiaries are supply‐driven while those in purely competence‐exploiting subsidiaries are demand‐driven. Using data on U.K. subsidiaries of non‐U.K. MNEs, we find that …

Analytical Differences in the Economics of Geography
In this paper we argue that the various discussions of the regional location behaviour of the multinational firm by the different fields of analysis which deal with these issues are all rather at a tangent to each other. Only economic geography and regional economics discuss firm-location behaviour at the subnational regional level, whereas international trade theory and traditional international business analysis focus only on firm locations at …
