  • Adam Smith in his time and ours

    Open Access•Graham Brownlow•ARTICLE•Contemporary Social Science•2026

This paper is concerned with the relationship between the history of economic thought, economic history and economic policy with a particular focus on interpretations of Adam Smith and his example as an economic historian. Smith was far from the prophet of self-interest described by George Stigler. Ironically, while Stigler’s influential characterisation of Smith was partial, his own discussions of interests and capture is far more Smithian. Smit…

  • Northern Ireland and the Economic Consequences of Brexit

    Open Access•Graham Brownlow•ARTICLE•Contemporary Social Science•2023•Referencias: 18

This paper investigates the economic implications of Brexit by making recourse to original archival studies as well as the literatures concerning modern British and European economic history as well as the Two Irelands. An overriding lesson is that Northern Ireland, like the UK as whole, has suffered from weaknesses in competition and productivity that have given rise to long-run economic underperformance. Only after Brentry was this legislation …

  • Place-based industrial strategies in the context of the Northern Ireland Protocol

    Open Access•Graham Brownlow, Leslie Budd•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

As a lagging regional economy that underperforms the rest of the UK, Northern Ireland represents a number of continuing challenges that have a long history. In recent years, technologies and processes associated with Industry 4.0 have had little impact with a few exceptions. Yet these activities have become central to industrial policy and strategies in the last two decades, in spite of the path-dependent nature of the economy. The underperforman…

  • Sense making of Brexit for economic citizenship in Northern Ireland

    Graham Brownlow, Leslie Budd•ARTICLE•Contemporary Social Science•2019•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 5

Northern Ireland appears to be the keystone for building a sustainable outcome for Brexit for the whole of the United Kingdom and its future relationship with the other Member States of the European Union, especially the Republic of Ireland. The complex constitutional, political, socio-economic, geographical and cultural position of Northern Ireland means that resolving the current negotiating difficulties rests on a wider set of considerations. …

    Open Access•Graham Brownlow•ARTICLE•Irish Economic and Social History•2018

  • Practice running ahead of theory? Political economy and the economic lessons of UK devolution

    Graham Brownlow•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2017•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 12

Advocates of political decentralisation make much of its supposed ‘economic dividends’. Critics of this argument, while acknowledging the possible benefits, suggest that the specific ‘institutional geography’ under which devolution operates is crucial. In short, the Institutionalist critique is that economic outcomes are contingent on the way devolved institutions are designed. The institutional geography of contemporary UK devolution, as well as…

  • Should the fiscal powers of the Northern Ireland Assembly be enhanced

    Esmond Birnie, Graham Brownlow•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2016•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

Should the fiscal powers of the Northern Ireland Assembly be enhanced? Regional Studies. Northern Ireland has been characterized by an inability to narrow the persistent economic gap relative to Britain. Some commentators have suggested that regional corporation tax variation may be the ‘game changer’ in closing this gap. This paper draws on a range of studies that help one better understand the historical and institutional context. However, the …

  • Back to the failure

    Graham Brownlow•ARTICLE•Business History•2015•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 37

There has been a recent identification of a need for a New Business History. This discussion connects with the analytic narrative approach. By following this approach, the study of business history provides important implications for the conduct and institutional design of contemporary industrial policy. The approach also allows us to solve historical puzzles. The failure of the De Lorean Motor Company Limited (DMCL) is one specific puzzle. Journ…

  • Towards an Acceptable Level of Violence

    Graham Brownlow•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2012

Institutional and economic development has recently returned to the forefront of economic analysis. The use of case studies (both historical and contemporary) has been important in this revival. Likewise, it has been argued recently by economic methodologists that historical context provides a kind of “laboratory” for the researcher interested in real world economic phenomena. Counterterrorism economics, in contrast with much of the rest of the l…

  • The causes and consequences of rent-seeking in Northern Ireland, 1945-721

    Open Access•Graham Brownlow•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2007•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 17

Northern Ireland's economic performance during the 'golden age' was weak. Crafts suggested that rent-seeking was an important determinant of this poor record. This article offers support for such a conclusion. It is suggested that the growth record was shaped by British regulations preventing conflicts of ministerial interest not being made operational until 1963. This institutional divergence tended to promote rent-seeking behaviour, which imped…
