Do teachers’ own learning behaviors influence their classroom goal orientation and control ideology
Effects of Massed versus Distributed Practice of Test Taking on Achievement and Test Anxiety
The effects of massed versus distributed practice on achievement and test anxiety were investigated using a quasi-experimental design employing 56 college students under two conditions. Test anxiety was assessed using Sarason's four-dimensional Reactions to Tests, while classroom achievement was measured on tests using multiple-choice applications. Experimental subjects were given four Reactions to Tests items and 10-item examinations on a weekly…
The Development and Validation of an Arabic Version of an Academic Self-Concept Scale
For a sample of 175 Arabic students attending three universities in the United States (one in Los Angeles and two in Colorado), the psychometric results arising from the development and validation of an Arabic version of an existing college level form of a standardized academic self-concept scale are presented. Both exploratory orthogonal and oblique factor analyses lent support to three of the original five hypothesized constructs underlying thr…
Utility of Scales Derived from Teacher Judgements of Adolescent Academic Performance and Psychosocial Behavior
Justification is presented for using teacher judgements of student achievement and psychosocial functioning as "indirect measures" of school-related outcomes. An 18-year follow up study of a Danish birth cohort (N=350), for whom no standardized or "direct" measures were available, was used as the context in which the BAMED Teacher Rating Form was designed and developed. The 106-item Form yielded 23 empirically and logically derived scales with al…

Cultural and Sexual Differences in Test Anxiety, Trait Anxiety and Arousability
Cultural and sexual differences in test anxiety were investigated in samples of high school students in Egypt (N= 277), Brazil (N = 234), and the United States (N = 141). Measures of trait anxiety and trait arousability were also included. Compared to the United States greater test anxiety was found in Egypt on both the worry dimension and the emotionality dimension. Greater test anxiety was also found in Brazil, but only on the emotionality dime…
Retest Effects on Standardized Structure-of-Intellect Ability Measures for a Sample of Elementary School Children
Within the context of a battery of 26 multifactor aptitude tests entitled the Structure of Intellect Learning Abilities Test and developed from the structure-of-intellect conceptual framework, the major purpose of this study was to examine for a sample of more than 2,000 elementary school children the nature and degree of relationship of retest effects from a first testing (pretest) to a second testing (posttest) two to four weeks later to (a) gr…
Long-Term Effects of Divorce on Adolescent Academic Achievement
A sample of 77 children who had experienced a divorce in the family during childhood was identified in a group of 350 children who took part in a 18-year follow-up study on the Danish Prospective Perinatal Cohort. Reading and mathematics proficiency measures collected in the 11th and 12th grades were correlated with a set of eight measures derived from an intensive interview of the mothers designed to assess various potential stresses in the soci…
A new, more powerful approach to multitrait-multimethod analyses
The advantages of applying confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) data are widely recognized. However, because CFA. as traditionally applied to MTMM data, incorporates single indicators of each scale (i.e., each trait-method combination), important weaknesses are the failure to (a) correct appropriately for measurement error in scale scores, (b) separate error due to law internal consistency from uniqueness due to wea…
Components of Original Thinking in Gifted Children
The dimensionality of the construct of original thinking was examined by using measures designed to control both for the occurrence of confounding of the construct of originality by that of fluency and for task ambiguity. Subjects were 315 gifted children in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. The results indicated that original thinking was conceptually distinct from general intelligence. Evidence for a general originality construct was mixed. …
Transformation Abilities
Confirmatory factor analysis was used to reanalyze correlational data from selected test variables in Guilford's Aptitudes Research Project (Hoepfner, Guilford, and Bradley, 1968). Results indicated that Guilford's model does serve to reproduce more closely the original correlation matrix than does either a no factor (null) model, a random factor model, or a single (general) factor model. Further, most of Guilford's tests exhibited high loadings …
The Measurement of Preference for Course Structure and Preference for Course Difficulty
The development and psychometric characteristics of the Instructional Preferences Inventory, a measure of "classroom" personality, are described. This instrument was designed to measure preference for course structure (PCS) and preference for course difficulty (PCD). Statistical findings supported the instrument's reliability and factorial validity
Significance Testing and Efficiency in Lisrel Measurement Models
Traditionally, LISREL confirmatory factor analytic measurement models are tested against a null model of total independence. Using randomly generated factors in a matrix of 46 aptitude tests, this investigation has shown that this approach is unlikely to reject even random factors. An alternative null model, based on a single general factor, is suggested. In addition, an index of model efficiency is introduced as a helpful adjunct to contemporary…

Effects of Test-Wiseness Training and Ethnicity on Achievement of Third- and Fifth-Grade Students
This study determined whether test-wiseness training would influence the achievement of students in math and reading. Significant effects were noted in math for fifth-grade students
Validity of Higher-Order Ability Constructs in Structure-of-Intellect Tests All Involving Semantic Content and Operations of Cognition or Evaluation
Through use of confirmatory maximum likelihood factor analysis in conjunction with the LISREL V computer program devised by Jöreskog and Sörbom, an evaluation was made of the validity of higher-order ability constructs in structure-of-intellect tests all containing semantic content and operations of cognition or evaluation. The hypothesized first-, second-, and third-order factors were all reproducible with every one of the estimated factor loadi…

The Factorial Invariance of Student Evaluations of College Teaching
University instructors who taught the same course at least four times over a 4-year period were evaluated by different groups of students in each of these four classes (N = 316 instructors, 1,264 classes, 31,322 students). Factor analyses of the class average ratings clearly replicated the nine evaluation dimensions found in earlier studies. A multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix was formed in which the nine dimensions were the multiple traits, a…
Familiar Correlates of Gang Membership
The differences between the families of youths who are gang members versus youths not in gangs were investigated. Data were collected from thirty mothers using a semi-structured interview. Results indicated that family related variables distinguish the families of gang members from the control families. Specifically, youths in gangs are more likely to come from families which put less emphasis on intrafamilial socialization, youth supervision, an…
