Size‐Sound Iconicity in English‐Like Pseudowords Influences Referent Labeling and Prosody
Speech sounds can communicate perceptual information through iconicity, or shared resemblance between sound and meaning. This study examined how passage content influences attitudes toward American English Accents. Participants listened to passages differing in topic content spoken in an American Southern English or Standard American English accent. Vocalizations are among the diverse cues that animals use to recognize individual conspecifics. For some calls, such as noisy screams, there is debate over whether such recognition occurs. This study examined how perceptual sensitivity contributes to gender differences in vocal accommodation. Male and female shadowers repeated isolated words presented over headphones by male and female speakers, and male and female listeners evaluated whether accommodation occurred.
