  • Dunavec revisited

Open Access•Mirco Brunner, Adrian Anastasi et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•Referencias: 24

Efforts to drain Lake Maliq, in the Korça Basin of eastern Albania, during the 1940s and 1950s revealed waterlogged wooden structures that were excavated in the 1970s and identified as Neolithic pile-dwellings. Fifty years later, new excavations are exposing the exceptional organic preservation and complex stratigraphy of the Dunavec site. Through a combination of dendrochronological and radiocarbon dating, the authors provide the first secure ab…

Thomas C Hauck, Rudenç Ruka et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2016•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 11

Albania is a possible stepping-stone for the dispersal of Homo sapiens into Europe, since Palaeolithic traces (namely from the so-called Uluzzian culture) have been discovered in neighboring Greece and Italy. After two years of searching for evidence of modern humans in Albania we here report on excavated test trenches representing two time slices: an Aurignacian open-air site from southern Albania and two Epigravettian cave sites in central and …

  • A Preliminary Investigation of Two Prehistoric Cave Sites in Southern Albania

    Open Access•Karen Francis, K D Francis et al.•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•2009•Referencias: 9

In this article we describe the evaluation of two prehistoric sites situated within the coastal zone of south-western Albania, originally investigated by the Italian prehistorian Luigi Cardini in 1939. The first is a cave site in the town of Himara; the second a rock-shelter at Kanalit in the Acroceraunian Mountains to the north. Investigations at both locations revealed stratified evidence of prehistoric activity dating from the mid-Holocene. At…

  • The Via Egnatia (Albania) Project and the bridge at Topçias

Open Access•Maria Grazia Amore, Lorenc Bejko et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Roman Archaeology•2001

The Via Egnatia has attracted limited attention over the last half-century. The ancient road, crossing Albania between Durrës ( Dyrrachium ) and Qafe Thane, was one of the major thoroughfares of antiquity, and it remained in use until modern times. This brief report describes the work of the new Albanian Rescue Archaeology Unit, working in collaboration with the Institute of Archaeology of Albania, in an attempt to document parts of the road whic…
