  • Autoethnography as a Never-Ending Story

    Open Access•Laurie L Charlés, Laurie Charles•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2016

The proliferation of autoethnographies offers scholars and writers multiple opportunities to consider the various methods of authorial positioning in qualitative research inquiry. In this article, I review Guyana Diaries: Women's Lives across Difference, by Kimberly D. Nettles, while reflecting my own choices as an autoethnographic author. Autoethnographic writing is presented as a 'never-ending story,' which may have lasting, transformative effe…

  • Intimate Colonialism

    Laurie L Charlés•BOOK•Intimate Colonialism•2016

Laurie Charlés finished her Ph.D., then took off to West Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer. Asked to create programs to help adolescent girls stay in school, she found herself enmeshed in the politics and cultural barriers that prevent these girls from creating a better life. But that was not all that was enmeshed. Charlés found love, sexual fulfillment, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination, all of which further complexified her stated mi…

  • My Nine Lives as an Academic

    Open Access•Laurie L Charlés•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2009•Referencias: 7

In this article, I describe my experiences 72 hours after I was told I had a life-threatening medical condition. My experience as an autoethnographer and my interest in embodied knowing put a unique spin on the narrative that developed in those three days. What I present here is an autoethnographic story of my experience, which culminated in a "miraculous" life-saving procedure that probably saved my life-but left me with multiple questions about…

  • Cultural Competency as a Relational Process

    Open Access•Laurie L Charlés•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2007•Referencias: 11

This article describes the experiences of a U.S.-based family therapy practitioner during a 3-week academic consultation in the Philippines. Revisioning the concept of cultural competency as a performance that occurs in relationship, the author shares three autoethnographic stories that illustrate cultural borderlands in the global arena of family therapy training and practice. The stories address (a) questioning dominant (U.S.) views of family t…

  • Young Women Struggling for an Education

    Laurie L Charlés•ARTICLE•Journal of Feminist Family Therapy•2006•Referencias: 3

In this article I describe the development of a project designed to improve the educational opportunities of young girls in a rural village community in West Africa. Using a metaphor of witnessing (Weingarten, 2003), I describe my experiences working on a project that resulted in the formation, with host country nationals, of a committee to promote girls' education in the village community. From a first-person perspective, I outline the formation…
