German Jewry and the Allure of the Sephardic
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as German Jews struggled for legal emancipation and social acceptance, they also embarked on a program of cultural renewal, two key dimensions of which were distancing themselves from their fellow Ashkenazim in Poland and giving a special place to the Sephardim of medieval Spain. Where they saw Ashkenazic Jewry as insular and backward, a result of Christian persecution, they depicted the Sephardim as wo…

German Jewry and the Allure of the Sephardic
Framing the Conversation
When Hitler became Chancellor of Germany on 30 January 1933 the Jewish population of the country stood at around 600,000. When, by May 1945, his reign of terror ended, most of those Jews had either
Jewish Genetic Origins in the Context of Past Historical and Anthropological Inquiries
The contemporary study of Jewish genetics has a long prehistory dating to the eighteenth century. Prior to the era of genetics, studies of the physical makeup of Jews were undertaken by comparative anatomists and physical anthropologists. In the nineteenth century the field was referred to as "race science." Believed by many race scientists to be a homogeneous and pure race, Jews occupied a central position in the discourse of race science becaus…

From Łódź to Tel Aviv
This article is an exploration of the political satire of Shimen Dzigan and Yisroel Shumacher and traces the careers of these two comedy superstars in Poland before the war and then in Israel, thereafter. It places them in the context of the history of Jewish entertainment and makes a particular claim for the innovative nature of Yiddish comedy, namely that it was an entirely modern form of Jewish expression. Dzigan and Shumacher performed in wha…
Critique of Pure Football’
This article engages Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht's notion of the aesthetic dimension of sports as constituting one of its principle elements of popular appeal. Drawing a distinction between individual and team sports and by focusing on the latter in the form of soccer, the author places less emphasis on aesthetics than on the ‘‘narrative’’ dimension of football. Through the publication of parts of a diary he kept during the 2006 FIFAWorld Cup in German…

Medicine and the German Jews. A History
Medicine played an important role in the early secularisation and eventual modernisation of German Jewish culture. As both physicians and patients, Jews exerted a great influence on the formation of modern medical discourse and practice. This fascinating book investigates the relationship between German Jews and medicine from medieval times until its demise under the Nazis. John Efron examines the rise of the German Jewish physician in the Middle…

Defenders of the Race
By the late nineteenth century, physical anthropologists were engaged in debates about the "Jewish Racial Question," asking whether there was a biological basis for Jewish distinctiveness and social development. This fascinating book describes for the first time the response of Jewish race scientists to these debates, demonstrating that in their participation, the scientists were involved in a complex process of Jewish self-definition, one that w…
