One Right Way, Intercultural Participation, and Language Learning Anxiety
This study investigated self‐assessed anxious learners who enrolled in online Spanish courses to determine if their anxiety was mediated by the lack of face‐to‐face (F2F) and other synchronous learning interactions. Life history is somewhat of a stealth term – on the outside it looks harmlessly simple, but inside it is cloaked with ambiguity and its meaning is both slippery and elusive. The simple part derives from its point of origin: a researcher interviews a particular individual and elicits a richly detailed account of her or his life. This article explores the sometimes problematic issue of truth when conducting qualitative research on people's lives. Four ethical dilemmas are presented relating to the potentially harmful consequences of truth encountered by the authors in their own research: a promise to share the analysis of a patient's medical record containing unflattering comments by her physicians; the unintended sharing of a traumatic event, held secret since its occurr…
