Anankastic conditionals and the default theory of reasons
I identify and develop a solution to the puzzles of anankastic conditionals that is novel in the sense that it has gone largely unnoticed, but also well-worn in that the materials for it have long been available. The solution involves an integration of the classical Kratzerian premise semantics and a default theory of reasons (such as the one presented in Horty (Reasons as Defaults, Oxford University Press, 2012), leveraging several decades of re…

Confidence reports
We develop a states-based semantics for nominal and adjectival confidence reports like Ann is confident/has confidence that it’s raining, and their comparative forms. Our account leverages a Neodavidsonian analysis of adjectival comparatives in which adjectives denote properties of states and measure functions are introduced compositionally. We hereby provide the first systematic semantics for confidence reports, in addition to providing a needed…
The Open Future
In an apparent attempt to interpret Aristotle, Jan Łukasiewicz proposed that the idea that the future is open carries a semantic shadow: future contingents are neither true nor false, and connectives are governed by three-valued truth-tables. The view is suspicious, among other things, because it introduces violations of the law of excluded middle (LEM) that do not track intuition (when A is neither true nor false, so is A ∨¬A). Thomason’s applic…
Human Foreknowledge
I explore the motivation and logical consequences of the idea that we have some (limited) ability to know contingent facts about the future, even in presence of the assumption that the future is objectively unsettled or indeterminate. I start by formally characterizing skepticism about the future. This analysis nudges the anti‐skeptic towards the idea that if some propositions about the future are objectively indeterminate, then it may be indeter…
On Predicting
1. It is an established point in speech act theory that we should be wary of linking speech acts with hard-and-fast principles connecting a sentence's form and the force of its uses (Green 2017). So there might well be predictions that are neither performative nor transparent
Conditional Heresies
The principles of Conditional Excluded Middle ( CEM ) and Simplification of Disjunctive Antecedents (SDA) have received substantial attention in isolation. Both principles are plausible generalizations about natural language conditionals. There is however little discussion of their interaction. This paper aims to remedy this gap and explore the significance of having both principles constrain the logic of the conditional. Our negative finding is …

Judgment Aggregation
Judgment aggregation studies how collective opinions arise from the aggregation of individual ones. This article surveys a variety of aggregation rules (possible ways of aggregating individual judgments into collective ones). Aggregation by majority opinion is known to satisfy some but not all the desiderata for an aggregation rule. More general impossibility results show that not all the natural desiderata can be satisfied by a single aggregatio…
