Student and Staff Knowledge of School Tobacco Policies and Student E‐Cigarette Use, California 2022–2023
BACKGROUND: Since 2016, California has prohibited e-cigarette use alongside smoking in K-12 schools. School tobacco policies may reduce student e-cigarette use. METHODS: We analyzed 2022 to 2023 California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) and School Staff Survey data (n = 219,114). Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine associations between student and staff awareness of school tobacco policies and current e-cigarette use, adjusting for …

Exploring Mental Health and Holistic Healing through the Life Stories of Indigenous Youth Who Have Experienced Homelessness
Indigenous youth are the fastest growing population in Canada, yet are marked by profound and disproportionate personal, societal, political, and colonial barriers that predispose them to mental health challenges, employment and educational barriers, and experiences of housing insecurity and homelessness. A Risk Prediction Model for Long-term Prescription Opioid Use
BACKGROUND: Tools are needed to aid clinicians in estimating their patients' risk of transitioning to long-term opioid use and to inform prescribing decisions. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to develop and validate a model that predicts previously opioid-naive patients' risk of transitioning to long-term use. RESEARCH DESIGN: This was a statewide population-based prognostic study. SUBJECTS: Opioid-naive (no prescriptions in previous 2…

Effect of a media intervention on hepatitis B screening among Vietnamese Americans
Objective: There is a lack of controlled studies of community-wide interventions to increase screening for hepatitis B (HBV) among Asian Americans, particularly Vietnamese Americans, who disproportionately suffer from HBV-related illnesses. The objective of our study was to develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of a media campaign to promote HBV screening among Vietnamese Americans. Design: We designed and implemented a three-year me…
Prescription Drug Monitoring Program
Objectives. To estimate the effect of California’s prescription drug monitoring program’s (PDMP) registration mandate on use of the PDMP. Methods. We evaluated the effect of California’s mandatory PDMP registration law by fitting time series models on the percentage of clinicians registered for California’s PDMP and the percentage of clinicians who were active PDMP users (users who created ≥ 1 patient prescription reports in a given month) from 2…

Effective Referral of Low-Income Women at Risk for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer to Genetic Counseling
Objectives. To determine the effectiveness of a statewide telephone service in identifying low-income women at risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and referring them to free genetic counseling. Methods. From June 2010 through August 2011, eligible callers to California’s toll-free breast and cervical cancer telephone service were screened for their family histories of breast and ovarian cancer. High-risk women were identified and called…
Educational Interventions to Promote Healthy Nutrition and Physical Activity Among Older Chinese Americans
Objectives. To evaluate the efficacy of an in-language intervention of 2 lectures plus printed materials versus printed materials alone on knowledge and adherence to nutrition and physical activity guidelines among older Chinese Americans in San Francisco, California. Methods. From August 2010 to September 2013, we randomized 756 Chinese Americans aged 50 to 75 years to either lectures plus print (n = 361) or print (n = 357). Clusters were the pa…
Cognitive Interviews of Vietnamese Americans on Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Health Educational Materials
The purpose of this study was to better understand if a health educational presentation using culturally adapted materials was understandable and culturally appropriate, and that the content was retained, in an older Vietnamese American population. This study used cognitive interviewing. A convenient sampling was used to recruit eight participants by staff of a community-based organization from its client base. This is the first study to document…

Effectiveness of Lay Health Worker Outreach in Reducing Disparities in Colorectal Cancer Screening in Vietnamese Americans
Objectives. We conducted a cluster randomized controlled study of a lay health worker (LHW) intervention to increase colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates among Vietnamese Americans, who typically have lower rates than do non-Hispanic Whites. Methods. We randomized 64 LHWs to 2 arms. Each LHW recruited 10 male or female participants who had never had CRC screening (fecal occult blood test, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy). Intervention LHWs led 2…

Effectiveness of a Controlled Trial to Promote Colorectal Cancer Screening in Vietnamese Americans
Objectives. We conducted a controlled trial of a public education and provider intervention to increase colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates among Vietnamese Americans, who typically have lower rates than non-Hispanic Whites. Methods. The public education intervention included a Vietnamese-language CRC screening media campaign, distribution of health educational material, and a hotline. The provider intervention consisted of continuing medical…
Awareness and impact of the ‘Bubblewrap’ advertising campaign among Aboriginal smokers in Western Australia
Our findings suggest that mainstream antismoking mass media campaigns can positively influence the thoughts and behaviours that Aboriginal smokers have, and exhibit, towards quitting smoking. Notwithstanding this, advertisers should continue to look for better ways to incorporate Aboriginal themes in campaign messages. Future mainstream antismoking campaigns should source sufficient funds to ensure that advertising messages reach the large Aborig…
Impact evaluation of the Northern Fruit and Vegetable Pilot Programme – a cluster-randomised controlled trial

The Effect of Access and Satisfaction on Regular Mammogram and Papanicolaou Test Screening in a Multiethnic Population
BACKGROUND: Access and satisfaction are determinants of preventive service use, but few studies have evaluated their role in breast and cervical cancer screening in multiethnic populations. OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the relationship between race/ethnicity, access, satisfaction, and regular mammogram and Papanicolaou test receipt in 5 racial/ethnic groups. RESEARCH DESIGN: We conducted a telephone survey in 4 languages. SUBJECTS: Our su…
Young Latinas and Abortion
Latina women have often been portrayed as holding strong traditional family values leading to a greater propensity for rejection of contraception and abortion. Increasingly, the literature has consistently shown that Latina women use contraception effectively when available; however, much less is known about the prevalence of abortion and the factors related to its use in this population. In this article we examine Latinas' use of abortion and id…
Cancer Screening in Public Health Clinics
OBJECTIVES: To determine how screening for breast and cervical cancer in public health clinics was associated with overall clinic utilization. METHODS: Evidence of screening and clinic visits between June 1989 and May 1992 was obtained by medical record audit for a random sample of 1825 women aged 40 to 75 attending eight public health clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area. RESULTS: With an average number of visits (4 per year), women who did not…
Quality of Data in Multiethnic Health Surveys
Multiple complex elements affect measurement in a multiethnic survey, many of which are neither readily observed nor understood through standard tests of data quality. Multiethnic survey questions are best evaluated using a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods that reveal different types and causes of problems
